Over-ear ear defenders to deal with loud TV

Hello, I am looking for comfy, discreet-looking over-ear cans to help me deal with my DM’s v loud TV when I’m visiting her. She’s very elderly and a bit deaf, so perfectly entitled to have the TV loud, but I can no longer handle it - it’s giving me proper sore ears. Plus argh. I don’t want to make her feel crap about it - there are no neighbours to annoy, so something subtle that just takes the volume down from 11 🤣 to, say, 7, would do. I’ve looked on Amazon and seen things that look massive and tight.
i tried silicone in-ear ones, didn’t work, plus eating crisps was very bad, and eating crisps is one of my pleasures at mum’s 🤩

I'd buy your mum blue tooth headphones and a cheap smart TV for Christmas, save the poor neighbours having to listen to it loud the rest of the year and just put the subtitles on for my benefit

Does she have hearing aids? You can get some that link up to the TV but dare say they are probably more £££ than the TV.

I'm curious about subtler headphones as my teenagers walk about with enormous ones and claim it's due to their ASD, when I suspect it's more about refusing to hear me and the world. (And yes, our lives are already ruled by their accommodations. I'm not a monster.)

Some deaf people do very well with bone conduction headphones - such as Shokz.

You could try loop in ear ones. I wear them at night sometimes if my dh is snoring and they are very comfortable.

My first thought would be musicians earplugs, I have these:

which have three different levels of noise reduction. Though since you mention you've unsuccessfully tried silicone earplugs perhaps you've already tried this sort of thing. Mind you, I've never tried eating crisps whilst wearing mine!

She has a smart TV and there are no neighbours to worry about. I just want some over-ear ear defenders to mitigate the problem for me without upsetting my very elderly mum. Thanks for your suggestions though 🥰

Thanks for suggestions, but I am looking for something for my ears, not my mum’s. There probably isn’t an answer! It’s just that I’ve had to be there for two weeks and my ears were getting a bit tired 🤣

Look on Amazon for "noise attenuating" or "noise reducing" ear plugs. They're sold for reducing (but not completely blocking) loud music at concerts and festivals.

I see you mention you'd tried some plugs and they didn't work for you. But there are different styles and different materials available.

You will have the Crisp Problem with over-ear cans as well as with plugs.

MuddlingThroughLife · 20/12/2024 08:52

Look up Loops ear defenders. Far more discreet.

Lobstercrisps · 20/12/2024 08:57

Loop do different types and some are for wearing to tune out loud noises like at a concert.

Oh yes, good point re crisps! It was the double whammy of the telly being just as loud but the crisps sounding like fireworks 🤣
