Which would you choose to move to?

DH, toddler x 2 and I are planning a move back from DH’s home country where we’ve been for the last 7 years. It is bittersweet as I like where we live and have enjoyed being close to his family and friends. Leaving is logical for many reasons and not up for debate but the thought still makes me very sad and the worry of where to move to is making it worse!

We have two options:

  1. Winchester. 10 minute drive from parents, 45 from sister. My childhood city - lots of happy memories, only a few remaining friends. Good access to countryside and coast. Much smaller and less exciting than where we are now. Good school options. Maybe the chance to build a real community? But also a chance that we don’t fit in and I’m very lonely?
  2. London. Where DH and I met, studied and initially lived together. Easier to get back to his family to visit. Obviously very big - more chance to meet people but maybe we’ll suffer from friends constantly moving out? We’ve already had this where we are currently. Lots of friends but spread out, further from family support. Lots to do and lots of opportunities as DCs grow.

DH is self-employed and I plan to be a SAHM until youngest DC is at school so no jobs or childcare to plan around.

I feel like I flip flop on the decision every day! I’m worried we’ll be bored and lonely in Winchester and that it’ll feel a massive downgrade from the lovely city we are currently in. I’m worried if we choose London we’ll not be bored but might feel lonely and anonymous and we’ll be further from family support. I’d love some insight into what people would choose in our shoes.

I’ve got friends who raised kids in Walthamstow and live it, wouldn’t dream of being in Hampshire. I’m near Winchester and it is a bit sleepy for me, but it has been a great place to raise kids. I’ve had a good network and schools in winchester are great. My eldest is 17 and I know it’s a while off for you but the post-16 options in Hampshire are fantastic. She’s at PSC and its been brilliant. You have got cafes, restaurants, bars, a good cinema and a decent train to Waterloo. Close to New Forest and Southampton shopping and theatre are fairly decent and very close.

Ah I didn’t realise we hadn’t shared our budget! Probably could be stretched to 1m. A very healthy budget I know but doesn’t get us a huge amount in either place! Good point re affording babysitting. In Winchester I suppose we’d have the opposite problem, plenty of babysitting but would need to afford travel into London to socialise…
