Bleeding post hysteroscopy?

HysteroscopyWoes · 18/12/2024 10:22

I had a hysteroscopy eight days ago (ironically to investigate blood clots and heavy menstrual bleeding. I am 49 and cycles have been irregular and either very light or (increasingly) heavy for the last year.

Post procedure I took some transexamic acid, for a day. I didn't actually have any bleeding though (apart from small amount when wiping etc) for about three days. Then the bleeding started again! I started taking transexamic acid. There are no blood clots which was the major worry last time however, this is just like a "heavy but normal" blood/period.

NHS says (although different hospitals actually give varying info on this) bleeding is normal up to two weeks post procedure. But some say contact GP/hospital if the bleeding is heavy.

This last bleeding has been five days now and could perhaps just be a normal, albeit heavy, period returning. Just asking wise MNers who have experienced this, if I need to be contacting my GP, or worrying yet?

I wouldn't be normally worrying at all - but the two weeks post procedure of Official Start To Worry Time takes us up to Hannukah! So I am worried about leaving any concerns to the last minute.

I also have lots of guests, a light coloured sofa, and lots of food I want to eat Smile

Perhaps I should be getting prepared and asking for Northeristerone? Apologies for any poor spelling.

I had the same procedure and no bleeding for a few days, but then small amounts. I also had a mirena coil fitted and that can cause some bleeding for a few weeks/months on and off. I have a coil check in Jan.

I think a call to your GP would be a good thing to do, just to check and get some reassurance. Can you use tampons in the meantime?

Thank you for quick reply @MzHz! I don’t have a coil. They advised me not to use tampons or a cup until after the first post procedure menstrual period has finished. If that makes sense. So maybe this current bleeding is the next menstrual period right now, who knows? I think I might ring the GP. (Based on experience, in a couple of months I might hear back from a patronising male GP who will keep referring to it as a hysterectomy…) I actually had it done at an outpatients clinic so I’ll ring them I think. Thank you

I’m older than you, I shouldn’t be bleeding at all, they also found a polyp so removed that then fitted the coil.

he told me not to use tampons for a couple of weeks

what you’ve been told sounds right for you.

yeah, give em a quick ring and check this all out.

I don’t want to jinx it but it seems to have slowed today so I was probably over reacting! I’m glad your procedure found the problem and was successful @MzHz it must have been stressful. I read some MN posts before mine and was terrified to be honest, but it was actually nowhere near as bad as I was expecting. (Yes I think I definitely tend towards over reacting!)

I think I may add some colourful blankets to my white sofas for Hanukkah though. Just in case Grin
