Where do you store your recycling?

I feel like we constantly have excess recycling cluttering up the place and I am after ideas for how to store it better.

Where we live the local authority provides two plastic boxes (about the size of a packing box) - one for plastic/glass and one for paper/card - which are each collected fortnightly.

Indoors we have two small recycling bins (each the size of two shoeboxes).

Each fortnight we are generating way more recycling than will fit in the outdoor boxes and we end up with recycling run-off (e.g a cardboard box full of other paper card, plastic bag full of milk bottles and jars) cluttering up the kitchen waiting for recycling day. And I am fed up with it!

There must be better solutions - what does everyone else do with recycling?

The main issue - which you can't do anything about - is your council. Outside we have four full size bins for the different types and then the food caddy. Inside I have: an IKEA recycling box under the sink for hard plastics and metals, four recycling bins in the pantry for paper/card, soft plastics, glass and WEEE.

We have 4 full sized bins so we store recycling in the bin😀. We have to take glass to the tip, which is irritating.

Ask the council for extra recycling bins. We have 4, which comes in handy when they don't collect for a few weeks, or I CBA to put the bins out.

OldTinHat · 18/12/2024 10:48

That's ridiculous of your council!

Where I live, we have a full sized green wheelie bin for recycling, a narrower black bin for general household waste, a food caddy and, if we want to subscribe, another bin (or bags) for green waste. All collected fortnightly with the exception of the food caddy which is collected weekly.

I put recycling on the side in the kitchen and then just pop it into the green bin whenever, maybe a couple of times a day.

We have two large bins Green and Black collected fortnightly, black is normal waste, green is recycling and you can pay extra for a brown one for garden waste.

Indoors I have a normal freestanding bin for household waste and a bin in a cupboard for recycling and just empty once a week from indoors to outdoors. All recycling goes together and gets sorted at the recycling centre

NordicwithTeen · 18/12/2024 10:58

I've got 4 full size outdoor bins, one for normal waste, one for garden, one for plastics and one for cardboard. I still have 2 IKEA stackable storage tubs in the kitchen (one for card and one for plastic) and end up with boxes on the floor waiting to be taken out. Bins seem to dominate the garden and the kitchen!

In the recycling bin!

Doggymummar · 18/12/2024 11:16

We have ours ina washing basket and empty that when it's full into the blue bin outside. Sometimes we have too much, but we only have one black bag of waste so we store the excess in the black bin outside and feed it in as and when there is space.

stopringingme · 18/12/2024 11:34

We have green bin bags for recycling, which are collected weekly.

We have a storage bin on our driveway, which we put full ones in.

Boxes can be put out separately, which we store in the shed.

INdoors: In a cardboard (apple) box that's about... 58 x 25 x 33 cm. I live alone so it takes a few weeks to fill up.

Fabulouslyunfabulous · 18/12/2024 11:44

Our Council is box for glass/fabric, bags for card/ paper/plastic/tins, caddy for food.

We have an out building to store it but had to ask for extra bags.

KnickerlessParsons · 18/12/2024 11:49

Most supermarkets have recycling bins. We take bits and bobs there if our bins get full as we get close to our fortnightly collection date.

Natsku · 18/12/2024 12:12

A big cardboard box under the worktop in the kitchen for cardboard, plastic recycling goes in a carrier bag, two boxes under the sink, one for metal and one for glass, and a box under the kitchen table for paper.
I take them to the recycling bins at the supermarket when they get full (weekly for plastic and cardboard, rest takes longer).

RaisinFlapjack · 18/12/2024 12:26

Yes the main problem is we don't have big enough council-supplied bins (we can request extra boxes, but we don't have enough space for additional boxes outside (London property with small external space) - we have to stack the two boxes on top of each other to fit in front of the house which in itself is sub-optimal as they don't really stack nicely. We have to bag up the excess on recycling day and place it next to the council supplied box. But I just don't have anywhere to store it in the interim. It ends up living in the car boot
