exciting stuff....

my daughter pointed out that our laundry doesn't smell. I use Lidl 2 in 1 Bold knock off. it cleans fine and it takes away the smell of dirty laundry. but she's right, we don't get that lovely comforting smell that hits you when you walk into some people's houses and they are doing laundry

I've done a bit of research and I am thinking Surf or Daz. I prefer powder to liquid but will change if it smells better. but should I use a fabric softener as well? why don't the people that make laundry detergent also make fabric softener so the smells double up/don't clash?

if you have lovely laundry, what do you use?

I just want my clean laundry to smell of clean laundry.

TheCheeseTax · 18/12/2024 00:15

Last time my sister visited she raved about our laundry smell on the cushion covers and blankets and the room she slept in. We use persil pods and Wilton liquid from Amazon, so so nice. She went out and bought three bottles!
I love nice smells. Waiting on my Tallow and Ash samples!

Actual Bold 2 in 1, white vinegar in the fabric softener compartment. Read the dosing instructions on the powder and adjust for load size, dirt level and water hardness.

Leave machine open between uses

Clean machine out regularly (cleaning cycle on hot until any suds disappear, check filter - mine had a big rusty nail and a dead shield bug in it the other day 🤢)

Don't overfill machine. Wash bedding and cleaning cloths, and anything still smelling musty at 60. Take washing out ASAP after it finishes. Run proper cycles, not quick washes unless you only have a couple of things to wash.

If your water supply is in any way dodgy, don't start the washing machine and dishwasher at the exact same time or start the WM then go and run a bath/shower. Stagger one machine. They run on timed fill so you'll get too little water.

The Lenor bead things must be awful but they do add a really long lasting scent - I buy them when I see them on offer. However the Lenor powder is totally rubbish! (Don't know if this is sold in the UK but it is where I live. Glad I didn't buy the giant 100 wash box!)

I know it's not really that big of a deal but it makes me feel like a fully competent adult to fold laundry and put it away when it smells all lovely Blush also getting the DC after childcare and giving them a big cuddle when they smell all clean is great.

lots of good advice, which I will try thanks. I think I am guilty of overloading the machine and not adjusting for hard water. I do clean the machine and filter though. and I was using white vinegar. it is brilliant for getting rid of smells isn't it...but isn't hitting the spot

Haven’t read the full thread.

I add dettol to my laundry - it’s a laundry sanitiser. I use it in addition to Fairy non bio pods.

If I don’t, our clothes smell like wet dog in the winter months when they don’t dry quickly enough.

I love smells too. and I'm very sensitive to them

I will only use daz powder and comfort coconut softener. It smells so good I barely use as it's so concentrated and and a little really go a long way,

Willowback · 18/12/2024 00:29

Persil bio and asevi dreams although i buy the marseille soap softener in the summer when line drying. I took the dog a walk in the summer and I could smell a gorgeous smell walking along our street then realised it was my washing the whole street smelt lovely

weareallcats · 18/12/2024 00:36

It’s because you are used to it. A friend of mine commented that our laundry smells amazing and hers smells of nothing when her clothes and home smell very strongly of washing powder to me,

I think ours really doesn't smell. I'm quite sensitive to smells. so I'm happy our laundry is CLEAN...all the bad smells are removed, but there is no detergent smell when it's drying in the rack

Laundry scent booster, Zoflora and limescale tablets, on top of Ariel pods

We use Wilton - I love the cedar wood and jasmine

Cottonpink · 18/12/2024 06:14

I use the persil or ariel pods.
Comfort strawberry and lily
Or the Spanish cleaning dreamy asevi fabric conditioner.
Then lenor scent beads in with towels and bedding etc

Slightly derailing the thread, but as a teacher it’s so funny watching the kids in school identify their own jumper out of a pile of discarded ones by smelling them! One boy once got really upset because his parent had used a different soap powder and he refused to accept the jumper that smelled different was his - despite it having his name sewn inside it!
Mondays can be a sneezy day when the kids come in freshly washed, over perfumed uniform. It’s like wafting through the perfume section of a department store!
On a negative note, laundry that smells of whatever scent detergent you've chosen will be full of artificial scent chemicals and those chemicals aren't doing our waterways any good.

ExceededUsefulEconomicLife · 18/12/2024 06:32

I use the Tesco liquid tabs and the scent boosters. Makes the house smell lovely as they're drying too. Cheap and fragrant. The scent boosters go down quite quickly and I don't think they're great for the washing machine.

this is a bugbear of mine I am afraid. As a service user, I pay alot of money to the water company to treat the sewage and grey water that we produce as a household. there are many processes and technologies that can effectively return to waste to potable water standards. where persistent chemicals are identified, then manufacturers should (and mostly are thanks to REACH and ROHS) be made to remove them from their products.

manufacturers and particularly water companies make massive profits. I barely have any disposable income and I will not be guilted into spending it on over priced Eco-products. and I won't be guilted because I don't want laundry that smells like wet dogs. I am very much over, the pressure on the consumers being made to feel guilty for environmental degradation which is outside of their control. it's a marketing ploy

How's that relevant? OP wants her laundry to smell

It's like going on a thread where someone asks for a recommended dog breed and saying "I hate dogs"
You wouldn't do it in normal conversation

I am sorry fivebyfivebutterfly but I typed this wrong.
I should of wrote my laundry smells just of clean laundry and not of artificial smells.
Not just because of the cost and machine damage caused by these over priceda nd to me unessecery additives but as a COPD sufferer the smells damage my lungs even more.
I used to (for example) be addicted to Zoflora, until it gave me a terrible reaction that put me in hospital for two days as I could not breathe because of the strong scent.I avoid all scented products now even expensive perfume.
Apologies for going off the gist of this thread.

I like this sound of this - I didn’t realise Marseille did laundry products . Please can you tell me the name of the one you use?
(I had a Google, but there are a few different products)

I think poster says it's the 'dreams' one. I've just bought the Marseille soap one and will report back

I prefer unscented laundry stuff, but I've recently started using laundry sheets/leaves which are really difficult to find in unscented, and my middle grandson told me last week that we smelt of my house, and my house smells lovely, so the Dr Beckman laundry sheets have a thumbs up from him.

It's very subtle though as I am quite sensitive to smells, so may not be strong enough for you.

Totally get what you mean — a fresh laundry scent really does add comfort to a home. Some people also outsource their laundry these days to keep everything smelling amazing and perfectly done. If you're ever tempted to go hands-free, clean clothes without the hassle is becoming a thing with pickup and delivery wash-and-fold services.
