Had a coil fitted and feel so weepy and emotional

I had a coil replaced today. One out and another one in.
It was horribly painful and I cried on the table and was shaking.

The nurses were lovely and actually while it really hurt it wasn't as bad as last time.

But I feel so shaken up and emotional.i can't stop crying. I feel like I've been in a car crash or something.

Did anyone else feel like this?

They should definitely give gas and air or something!

It sounds like it was a really traumatic experience for you lovely. I'm so sorry. Have you anyone who can come and sit with you and provide a comforting hug or reassuring presence? Perhaps the experience also triggered something for you and had bought some stuff up. Be kind to yourself and if you have any rescue remedy or someone who can pop out and get some, that might help, even if just in a placebo-y kind of way. Sending you a gentle hug. Flowers

I cried and cried after I had mine put in. I couldn't sit for the 10 mins they said as I had to leave as I couldn't stop crying. It wasn't the pain so much but just really upset me, I can't explain it.

Firefly45 · 17/12/2024 18:04

Stalked yes this is it..I don't know why it's upset me and shaken me up so much!

It’s invasive isn’t it? I think crying isn’t an over reaction at all. Have some hot tea and rest. Treat yourself as if you’ve had a bit of a shock.

Coil fitting is weird
My last one was my least painful one and I was just about to get up when my blood pressure crashed
They had to put the head of the bed way down, I had a fan on, lucozade, another person called in. Meanwhile I'm legs in the air, head down, still half naked feeling like shit BlushGrin

I was fine after 15 mins but it was so weird for it to be coil number 4 and it happen

LittleGreenDuck · 17/12/2024 18:49

I had my first one fitted a month ago. It was awful, the nurse couldn't get it in, so had to go and get the Dr who, though successful, was absolutely brutal. I came home and cried all evening!

Had mine fitted to combat heavy peri periods and so far I've been bleeding lightly every day and feel really emotional. I'm hoping it'll settle down as I can't face going back yet, to take the thing out.

Have a relaxing evening and go easy on yourself. It's not a fun process!

QuestionableMouse · 17/12/2024 18:56

It's fucking disgusting they out woman through this. I'm so sorry.

temperance81 · 17/12/2024 19:04

It's not a pleasant experience. I'm on my 4th? one now (I need to get it changed as it's been so long!!) and I found some went in easier than others. I've been light headed and shaking after it. Agree with pp they should give gas and air to have it done!!

AmandaHoldensLips · 17/12/2024 19:06

Fucking hell. Having a coil fitted / removed is a shocking experience. I remember actually properly screaming in pain at one point (and I'm no chicken).

One time I was shaking for hours afterwards. Had to leave my car behind at the family planning clinic as I couldn't drive.

Bloody bastarding NHS and their wilful rejection of women's health issues and the pain they inflict upon us makes me want to throw bricks through windows.

AmandaHoldensLips · 17/12/2024 19:09

Yes - agree on the upset thing. It's because we've been massively violated and assaulted, under the guise of "choosing your contraception method".

Can you imagine a man being put in the position of having a metal wire anchor shoved right the way up his urethra into his ball sack? With no pain relief? And told, "there you go mate, now fuck off back to work because its' nothing."

TwinkleLights24 · 17/12/2024 19:10

I see these things as a trauma response. I felt very similar after having other procedures.

I hope you have a good sleep and wake up feeling better.

Gardendiary · 17/12/2024 19:17

I chatted to a friend about this, and, I hope this isn’t offensive, but we agreed that we felt like we’d been assaulted. I had mine changed a couple of weeks ago and felt dizzy and sick. I actually was better prepared this time, had diazepam and cleared the day so I could go back to bed while I got over it. It does make me angry that women’s pain is treated as so trivial.

Lobstercrisps · 17/12/2024 19:33

This happens to me.

Apparently the vagus nerve runs through the cervix which is why lots of women including me feel very faint afterwards.

My smear knocked my coil slightly by pulling on the long strings and so I spent a weekend feeling like I was going to pass out until GP removed it. Had to spend £200 on a private doctor to have it replaced as it was my HRT.

The replacement then made me feel like I was about to pass out for a few days until it settled.

I think it is bizarrely invasive. I've had three gynae surgeries and none of them made me feel as bad as my coil. Even in terms of vulnerability with legs in stirrups etc.

Our bodies are weird! Buggers give us no warning before doing something stupid!

I've had 2 changes now and only under general anaesthetic. Some things you just shouldn't be awake for. It actually really pisses me off reading stories like this and the pain women go through. Hope you feel better soon op.

GA makes me feel as bad as the coil insertion so wouldn't make any difference for me.

I would 100% opt for no GA.

But absolutely agree that a woman should have a choice.
