Moving to Suffolk / Norfolk

I had no idea where to post this so please direct me if needed!

we are looking to move to either Suffolk or Norfolk in the next few years. We want to use the time in between to visit regularly and get a good feel of some towns / villages but I don’t know where to start!

we do not want to be coastal, which helps bring cost down. Budget is around 550k. Ideally detached, with land (doesn’t have to be massive, but we don’t want to hear the next door neighbour’s screaming kids like they’re in our garden or barking dog for example). That said I don’t want to be the only house for miles, it would creep me out. But maybe a quiet lane with a few houses on.

ideally near a river for walks and canoeing.

we love the idea of a British village, not too quiet but old school - a butchers, greengrocers, post office and a pub. We would like to be able to walk a lot locally, and still have food shops delivered! Not worried about take always or anything like that.

within a 30 minute drive of a golf course would be good too.

any ideas?

Thanks re Halesworth shops. I wonder how Bungay is for shops and community. Another visit is in order.

Toy Shop, Haberdashers, one butchers shut and was turned into a cafe which shut in less than a year.. There is however an excellent health food shop!!!!

Bungay is a lovely community, with a mix of very well to do and hippy types. Shops are great if you like an old fashioned style of shopping: it has a butcher, fishmonger, veg shop, delis, bakeries, cafes and flower shop. It's not so great if you want a big Tesco.

In the same position, looking to move within the next couple of years. Have been visiting Suffolk for 3 years, and have narrowed it down to Beccles or Bungay. Have not seen as much of Bungay as I would have liked, but will be next year. Does anyone have any insight into Bungay at all? Are there any children's parks? They have a lovely Common !

There is a large children's play area next to the surgery/community centre

Yes I had heard about the upcoming new builds in Beccles (I’ve not been back for a while), although I think that they are on the opposite side of town to the Leman school. It seems to be happening to most small towns in Suffolk/Norfolk and elsewhere too - we moved to a tiny village where we live now, to get away from it a bit, but even here there is some building going on.

The newbuilds are off London road, up past the cemetery, so fairly near the leman. It's a big development with building still continuing, due to stretch right out to Barsham (hence it's name 'Barsham vale') and they have already put an entrance road in that end.

It is and it isn't - if you appreciate the outdoors it's fantastic. I run most days, walk the dog on the beaches, the parks and the woods, go kayaking on the sea, broads and rivers and have a pleasant life.

I previously worked in the shittier aspects of the town (homeless housing etc) I know that side better than most, and the town centre is deteriorating but I am still really happy living here!

I work in lowestoft too, in a job where I see many of the 'shittier aspects' aswell. It has put me off wanting to live or have my kids grow up there in all honesty- the town centre and schools (especially high schools) and central residential areas are really problematic and deprived.

As much as there are the benefits you mention with the beach etc and some very affluent areas I think they are sadly overshadowed by the difficulties the town has.

I live coastal suffolk between Ipswich and woodbridge. it's lovely but woodbridge is expensie, there are loads of new houses being built and the A12 has become horribly congested with all the new build and Sizewell traffic, so you're right to avoid!!

I would suggest Beccles, Bungay, Diss, Sudbury.
