I’ve woken up this morning to find hard plaque

Behind my front bottom teeth. It’s annoying me as my tongue brushes it everytime it moves.

Apart from seeing a dentist, which I have an appointment at the end of next month, is there anything else I can do, or do I just need to try to get used to it

Do you floss regularly?

That is pretty good for taking off soft plaque, not hard plaque which is what soft plaque becomes if not removed regularly.
Only the dental hygienist can remove that.
I find that, after flossing, if I dip my brush, with some toothpaste on it, into some baking SODA, and brush thoroughly with that combination, it makes my teeth feel really clean and smooth.

I used to use that a lot, but I've since read that you really shouldn't use baking soda like every time you brush, just once in a while.

I'd be flossing daily and switching to an ultrasonic toothbrush. I bought a Suri earlier this year and it's really helped. If you don't like flossing, use the Oral-B glide floss picks which do make it much easier.

If it's properly hard plaque, the hygenist will get that off (though sometimes flossing can dislodge it if you're lucky) but you should be going every 6 months anyway and then using the floss and toothbrush to keep the buildup minimal in between hygenist appointments.

No. I must admit I don’t floss. I’ve never flossed and this is the first time this has happened.

I have seen in google a “recipe” as such of two spoons of white vinegar in a cup of water with a pinch of salt that is supposed to help soften it.. but I’m wary of trying it

Agree, with the above comments, see a dental hygienist, l understand you got a dental appointment booked, l think the dentist will only do a check up, they would most probably advise you see a hygienist.

Vinegar will dissolve tooth enamel so I would not recommend this one little bit.

Hard plaque (tartar) forms when soft plaque has been undisturbed in a tooth for at least 24 hours. In other words if you clean effectively you will not get tartar forming.

you will need to start cleaning right down onto the gum on the inside of your front teeth as you are probably missing brushing the gums and will need to clean , effectively, every day inbetween your teeth. That night be floss or interdental brushes but it needs to be consistently every day.

Once tartar has formed only a dental professional can remove it , it is stuck on very tightly , no mouthwash, toothpaste, or home solution will remove it .

I had this recently

It looked like I had grown a second tooth!

This will absolutely make it crumble away: make a thick paste of salt, baking powder, toothpaste and a little water. Press it around the area with plaque and try to keep it there for 2 or 3 minutes. Unpleasant and you'll drool but it works!
