Ideas to occupy me whilst off sick

Loafbeginsat60 · 17/12/2024 06:15

I have been signed off work this week due to an arthritis flare up - my knee is twice the size it should be and I'm on crutches.

I have had one day at home already and I am so bored!

I can't really stand for too long or carry things so my usual go to like house projects or baking are out. I can't sit on a chair for too long I need to have my leg propped on a cushion on the sofa.

Any ideas what I can do to entertain myself for the rest of the week? My husband could pick supplies up at Tesco but I can't think what!

Or any good series to watch - I have all the usual tv channels and apps?

Apparently the doc can't help me and I just have to wait 2 months for a steroid injection 😭 😭 so I've made a private GP appointment this morning to see if there are any other options.

It's such a long day when you wake at 5am..... I have my work laptop and some teams meetings scheduled in tomorrow and all Thursday afternoon so that's something!

You poor thing. Sewing/knitting/crochet?

I rewatch greys anatomy when I’m not well but I saw Poldark on Netflix and would love to rewatch that.

Two moths for a steroid jab? That's ridiculous. I'm luck two GPs at my practice will do them for me.

Things to do. Any craft activities you like, sewing, knitting etc as already mentioned. Adult colouring book?

Could you send your DH to hobby craft and pick up a couple of 'kits'? They have everything from jewellery making to sun catchers. https://www.hobbycraft.co.uk/search/?q=kit&start=96&sz=48

Start a book journal, obviously read some books.

You said cooking is out but what about making some pickles? It takes ages to peel pickling onions.

Learn something, a language (OK you will not be fluent but maybe pick up some holiday phrases) programming if you don't already do it, maybe get a raspberry pi.

Plan your ultimate holiday if you won the lottery. OK you are not actually going but you can still do the research.

Do you have any wildlife around? I have a couple of squirrels and quite a few birds that I quite like to watch. You can get an app that you record birdsong and it identifies the bird for you, it's called Merlin bird ID.

On the squirrel front, I don't usually give them anything other than nuts but I had a jammy dodger the other day (a mixed pack of biscuits) that I don't eat so threw it out the window.

A squirrel got to it before the birds. picked it up and stuck it's nose in the jam. I was amused for ages.

Do you have Alexa or similar? Try some new things like phoning Santa, asking for jokes etc.

I recently had surgery and had a few weeks off recovering from that. I got addicted to jigsaws. Luckily a charity shop near me sells them for just £1.50!

Loafbeginsat60 · 17/12/2024 09:53

Thanks for the ideas!! I watched the Yellowstone finale this morning so I've had a good cry at that.

Got some fab painkillers too so I managed to stand long enough to wash my hair - that feels better.

I'll have a think about all the craft suggestions - bad sisters sounds interesting I'll look that up.

My son has jigsaws and a fold up board so I'll have a go at those later perhaps.

I had one last month and it didn't work. Hence having to wait 3 months in between for another.

I've got a private GP appointment at 11am - I read about hylauronic acid injections last night so will ask if that's a possibility.

My GP has said there is nothing they can do I just have to "see if it settles down" which of course it won't without treatment.

can you afford to see a private physio? I saw one with my knee arthritis and they put me on the right track plus gave massages and a plan of exercise which have helped considerably.

thehousewiththesagegreensofa · 17/12/2024 10:40

Can you sort your photos into albums or make some photo books?
Is there any admin you've been meaning to sort out ... change utility providers or bank accounts? If you have people's addresses, update those?
Is all of your work admin up to date? Is there any online training you can do? One of my colleagues credits her wizardry with Excel to when she was on bed rest whilst pregnant

Yes I've managed to book physio for Wednesday night and also a private orthopedic consultant on Thursday.

Have a 4 hour trip to get to him though which will be fun....

The new series called Black Doves is amazing on Netflix.

If you are seeing family over Christmas you could write out a Christmas quiz or fun game to have with drinks post lunch!

You could write Christmas cards for neighbours if you do them and get someone to drop them off.

You've reminded me that I was going to make the clingfilm game for Christmas Day.

So I will order some stuff for that and do it towards the end of the week.

Quiz sounds like a great idea too thanks

I'm off too atm, I colour in, do arrow word books, read my kindle and do online games, I like wordle and waffle.

Iliketulips · 17/12/2024 14:15

I love reading and find jigsaws addictive. If any of your friends and family are free, you could invite them around for a chat. Oh, and get everything together for Xmas in terms of final online order, writing cards and wrapping presents.

If you're someone who regularly does exercise classes, you might want to give an online sitting one a go - seems a bit odd, but it's a way of exercise and fills a few mins.

Hope you feel better soon.

slightlydistrac · 17/12/2024 14:32

Maybe you could look into researching your family tree.

Write that novel, or some poetry, or even just write down what you'd love to be able to say to someone you can't stand but aren't able to say to their face!

Look up a random small country the other side of the world on Wikipedia or wherever, and learn about it.
