Think I've been scammed!

I'm usually very aware of potential scams and so I'm so annoyed I didn't spot anything

Cleaning service has been popping up on my Facebook lots lately, works in my area, posting quite frequently on our local Facebook page and so I started following the company as I was thinking of getting a cleaner. Recently nominated for a local
Business award (or so they said) and recently expanded the business, great reviews (although on hindsight the reviews were cut and pasted into FB posts.

Over 1k followers, including some people I know (who are all pretty sensible and astute). Advertised some slots left for Christmas deep cleans a few weeks ago and I contacted them, she was pretty responsive, asked the right questions and said there was a £50 deposit which I transferred.

Clean was meant to be due today. At the weekend I realised I had only given her my postcode, not my full address, and started to think it was a bit odd she hadn't been in contact for my address. Sent message on Saturday to check all ok for today (not giving my address as I was starting to feel something might not be right). No reply. Sent another message late on Sunday evening.

In the meantime I decided to google the owner. Struck off a professional register last year (for a healthcare related job) as had received a criminal conviction. Newspaper articles about the conviction and suspended jail sentence. Funnily, she says in her posts that she DBS checks anyone who works for her!

Eventually got a reply to my message. Another girl was due to do my clean but her son is sick. The owner could instead do it later in the day or the other girl would be back the next day. Recent FB posts suggest they are fully booked right up to Christmas so this doesn't seem right either.

I haven't replied and don't plan to. I obviously don't want this lady in my house. I've lost my deposit and I'll have to put that down to experience.

If it is a scam, I don't understand why others haven't left bad comments on her FB posts (there are very few comments but I've now noticed quite a few angry face emojis). Her page looks very professional. I can't find any evidence that she's been nominated for the award she says she has been. And I found that someone else has set up a fake profile similar to her's and commented on a few older posts to saw she's a scammer, and the owner has commented back to say that this is completely untrue.

Annoyed at the situation, but also feeling so down because the house had really got on top of me, we're hosting Christmas and I was so looking forward to getting it cleaned and not having to think about it myself. Clearly I won't get anyone else to do it now at this late stage.

Bear in mind that as the owner of the Facebook page she can delete posts, so she's probably deleting the negative ones.

Tbf, you've not given her a chance, have you? The job is booked for today.

You've not been scammed. You're just prejudiced.

I wouldn't give her a chance either!

It's quite worrying that so many people appear to think she's genuine and deserves a chance to make it right.

She didn't ask for an address, she insisted on a deposit in the most unprotected way possible and clearly isn't the professional she claims to be given she has criminal convictions and has lied about winning business awards.

Yet everyone on here thinks that's okay and would happily have this woman in their home?

rosiethegremlin · 16/12/2024 09:05

But you haven't been scammed. You've looked online and think you've someone with the same name who has a criminal conviction, plus the organisation of the company sounds a bit crap. That's not the same as it necessarily being a scam. You can cancel if you want, or they can still come and you won't lose your deposit.

Anyone can be nominated for an award …

Doesnt sound like a good idea to let her come though.

There are also awards where you pay to be nominated! Loads of these so called. "local business awards" are just a cheap form of self-promotion - they don't actually mean anything.

HoundsOfHelfire · 16/12/2024 09:12

Why was she struck off? That would be the crux of it for me. Dishonesty or harm of any description, then I wouldn’t want her in my home. However something like a serious medical error I would view differently as this could be accidental and partly due to training issues.

HoundsOfHelfire · 16/12/2024 09:14

I dont think you’ve been scammed, not yet anyway. You’ve put a deposit on a job and she’s said she can do the job later today due to staffing issues.

confusedlots · 16/12/2024 09:14

The criminal conviction is definitely her, I can see a link to her own personal FB page from the business page and it's her. Nearly 10 separate charges, and just over a year ago, it's not that she did something stupid when she was young and has turned her life around or something like that.

She can't come as she doesn't know my address, only the postcode. I haven't replied to the message from late last night and she hasn't contacted me again to check if either of the new times offered suit.

I'm prepared to lose £50 as I don't want any further contact with the woman or her business, and I've learned my lesson for again.

What sort of charges were they?

She was struck off because of the criminal conviction, which was for a matter unrelated to her work, but it's common in professionally regulated jobs for you to be struck off the register for a serious criminal conviction.

Along the lines of assault and endangering the lives of others.

Is this the infamous cleaner in N Ireland?

Lincoln24 · 16/12/2024 09:20

If you've decided you don't want the service because of her history that's understandable but that doesn't make it a scam, she doesn't have to disclose her past and it doesn't mean her service doesn't exist.

SharpOpalNewt · 16/12/2024 09:28

I'd wait for them to come and then if no-one comes see if I can take it up with the bank.

And report them to local trading standards.

TheTwirlyPoos · 16/12/2024 09:33

I don't understand why you'd just accept losing £50. Mental

The woman has a violent past, has claimed she’s been nominated for awards which she hasn’t, in fact she’s not even been bright enough to invent an award which might show some credibility.

On top of which she claims her staff all have DBS checks even though she herself would never actually pass one?

rosiethegremlin · 16/12/2024 09:45

Not finding evidence of the award nomination doesn't necessarily mean she wasn't nominated.

ElaborateCushion · 16/12/2024 10:00

The angry emojis and no negative comments probably means she's deleting any that appear and getting her mates to post positive comments instead.

If you're not comfortable with her coming (and I understand why - I wouldn't want to leave her unattended, that's for sure), then accept the offer of the original person. If they then are continually unable to come, ask for your deposit back. That way at least the onus is on them not providing a service.

No - but alongside the fact that she's got criminal convictions and has already messed OP about shows she's not exactly trustworthy!

Dueanamechange2025 · 16/12/2024 10:48

What area are you @confusedlots ?

confusedlots · 16/12/2024 13:55

@Dueanamechange2025 I'd prefer not to say as I've probably given enough information already that's quite outing.

Ok, just someone in her posted something similar on here before and turned out it was the same company that I had had issues with.

They weren’t exactly a scam and did get the money back eventually. I think they over take deposits when they are short on cash and then cancel / push back / refund once some more deposits come in or they actually do the job for someone.

goldencabbage · 16/12/2024 16:43

They can remove comments they can't remove emoji
