Has anyone got pregnant when in perimenopause?

Is it possible or really unlikely ?

My cycles have changed from 35 to 28 days but I still ovulate (and I had bloods done and all hormones were apparently normal and AMH ‘too high’ so I was told I’m not in perimenopause but I disagree). I also have some hair thinning and exhausted all the time . I’m 43 so I assume all my eggs are too old now anyway ?

Sorry - to add - I wanted a third baby but we tried for the last 4 years and it just didn’t happen hence why I think I’m in perimenopause and not able to

I wouldn't be too sure, I was discussing perimenopause with a colleague for months, we were both 46 and had noticed lots of changes. She has menopause confirmed, I was 6 months pregnant... Baby is now 4 [laugh]

Yes. I didn't realise I was perimenopausal at the time but I had a high number (9) of early miscarriages and I think that the perimenopause may have been why. I did go on to have a successful pregnancy.

I’m not sure if this fits with what you are experiencing, but this is my story.

We wanted children but hadn’t had any success conceiving. We gave up all the fertility stuff but didn’t activity prevent pregnancy. As it reached a year in this mode I quietly thought to myself that parenthood wasn’t going to happen. I think I conceived about a fortnight after that. I was 42.

After DC was born, I went on the mini pill for a while. I didn’t like not having periods, so we agreed to use different method of contraception. However, my periods did not really return in any meaningful pattern and quite quickly stopped.

I think our DC was a menopause baby - nature giving us our final - in fact only - fertility spike.

Yes I did. Periods got lighter and shorter and PMT alleviated around age 42 yet got pregnant at 46!

Pamspeople · 15/12/2024 19:59

As long as you're bleeding, however sporadically, you can get pregnant and need to use birth controlif you don't want to be. I read last week that the advice is to use contraception for 2 years after last period for women under 50, and one year for women over 50.

Ginkypig · 15/12/2024 20:08

i was told that I had to be on it with contraception until peri past once I was on hrt. Because until you’re periods stop completely you are still fertile especially once you’re on hrt.

she said that’s why there used to be older parents who had big gaps between children then they had a surprise baby. She said the older nurses when she was in training used to joke about menopause babies! This was due to many women thinking that the sporadic periods and menopause symptoms meant they were past the point of worrying about it and so couples didn’t take the relevant precautions but were actually still very much able to fall pregnant.

I am in early menopause so am still very much in the age window of being fertile so I was to be extra cautious if I didn’t want my own surprise! I’m back using the implant!

im not saying it’s definitely possible as obviously I don’t know your own circumstances but I’m passing on what the menopause nurse told me.

Have you had your thyroid checked?

Mysa74 · 15/12/2024 20:27

Huge shock, and lovely surprise at the same time... Can't imagine life without them now. The broken nights were harder than they were for the elder sisters but I didn't mind, she's a gift xx

Mairzydotes · 15/12/2024 20:35

Apparently, the over 40s are the age group who have the most unplanned pregnancies.

My mum is 54 and had a UTI recently. The GP wanted to see her and asked her to do a pregnancy test. My mum was like don't be daft I'm menopausal and the GP said yeah but you're still getting the odd period and we always advise women to take the mini pill until 57. My mum was panicking lol! Thankfully no baby on the way but lesson learnt for them 2 lol xxx
