Where do you go that's quiet?

As the title says, looking for ideas that aren't full of PEOPLE.

Shops, roads, trains, swimming pools are all full of noise and people.

Where do you go for peace and quiet?

A walk in the woods

Ineffable23 · 14/12/2024 10:54

My town has a private library, about £6 a month. It's usually quiet, it has comfy chairs and a great selection of magazines and books.

SENMUMwhatnext · 14/12/2024 10:56

Some times you just need to adjust the timings of when you visit places.

MaybeALittle · 14/12/2024 10:59

A mile-long beach which is never crowded, even in high summer. Both because it’s so big but also because it’s too dangerous for swimming. Or a beech wood, though there timing, as a pp suggested, is key.

Elephantsarenottheonlyfruit · 14/12/2024 11:00

My son is autistic and we avoid peopley places.
As a PP said, timing can be everything.
We would go to public parks at 9am on Sunday.
Woods are a favourite- don’t always have to walk far. Drive and park at the edge. Go in a little way and it’s another world.
Noise cancelling headphones reduce the stimulation of busy/noisy places and make them more manageable.
We joined a small local hotel gym with pool and visit the pool at quiet times.

Country walks.

NoGwenItsABoxingDayTrifle · 14/12/2024 11:03

The beach, I'm lucky because I live opposite one.

BraveBlueDuck · 14/12/2024 11:04

Local woodland areas or nature trails or the library

RampantIvy · 14/12/2024 11:06

A walk in the woods

turkeymuffin · 14/12/2024 11:19

Strong themes here! I do have a local woods but just a bit bored of it. Maybe I need to brave driving to the coast. Would be nice when I get there but the faff puts me off.

@Ineffable23 swooning at the thought of a private library. Something to add to my list of 'what to look for in a place to retire to'.

Weirdle · 14/12/2024 11:27

I’m in Oxford, which is surprisingly stuffed to the gills with quiet wood and meadows to amble through.

But also, even at the height of the tourist season there are rooms at the Ashmolean that get very little footfall, so you can sit and gaze at your favourite mahogany head or pre-war street view for hours and hours with little disturbance.

YorkieTheRabbit · 14/12/2024 11:32

Home
The woods across the road from where I live
Plenty of public footpaths around the farms and moorland.

LlynTegid · 14/12/2024 11:33

Like others I have local woods and also a common to walk around. The latter with good paths so can be used all year round.

2025istheyear · 14/12/2024 11:34

Woods. Meadows. Big lake near my house (no dogs allowed because of local wildlife). My leisure club pool at lunchtime is never busy sometimes me and DH are the only ones in there!

WinterFoxes · 14/12/2024 11:35

I walk in local woods, off the big paths onto the deer tracks. Climb the local hills. Or walk on the local heath or around the lake. Lucky to have them all nearby.

Vettrianofan · 14/12/2024 11:38

In my head.

NovemberMorn · 14/12/2024 12:48

A library, if you can find one.

HarpQuartet · 14/12/2024 12:53

@NovemberMorn my local library is full of noisy, distracting people. I've been trying to study there for the last few weeks and the farters, mobile phone chatters, zoom callers, sniffers, snorters and crisp munchers are driving me bananas.

Real1378262 · 14/12/2024 12:53

Whilst the woods is nice, at the moment by ours it's too waterlogged. Add many dogs and bike riders when it is walkable, sometimes it's not peaceful at all.

I find having to go to leisure or retail venues either very early or very late to avoid queues, not always ideal but otherwise can be in the masses.

DOROteeaitchwhy · 14/12/2024 12:55

My town also has a lovely private library. I go to the beach or climb a small hill ina local country park where I can see the sea from the top.

Happyinarcon · 14/12/2024 12:56

All the historic ruins, empty during the cold months. Some of the more picturesque church yards

OK, you convinced me at 'farters'. 😬

Littletreefrog · 14/12/2024 12:59

The beach in winter, even better if it's raining.

Nourishinghandcream · 14/12/2024 13:00

A walk in the countryside.

We go everyday with Ddogs and depending on the route we take you can be certain of meeting other walkers or not - as the mood takes you.
Nothing like getting back to nature to let you forget about everything.
