What are you serving your veggie guests for Xmas dinner?

Or if you're vegetarian, what are you having?
It has to be something to go to go along side all the usual trimmings.
I don't mind either making it or buying it. Just has to be something lovely.

TIA

Last year I made individual mushroom Wellington things with blue cheese, and also a leek, blue cheese and Chestnut loaf (both recipes BBC Good Food I think). I'd be equally happy with risotto though, the bbc good food sage and butternut Squash risotto is gorgeous.

I’m vegetarian. I like all the veggie sides of a Christmas dinner, just be careful with the roast potatoes etc to ensure the oil used is vegetarian.

But yeah vegetables, potatoes, cheese - the usual staples.

Vegetarian here, this year I'm being lazy and getting Quorn escalopes, sides will be Brussels sprouts roasted in olive oil with garlic and Parmesan + cooked red cabbage with apples (Delia recipe), and probably roast potatoes with rosemary too.

FYI Parmesan isn’t veggie. Try a different veggie hard cheese instead

Dd is veggie and likes to just have the roasties and roast /steamedveg everyone else has with veggie stuffing and quorn cocktail sausages wrapped in this isn't bacon. And bisto best veggie chicken gravy.

Then a Christmas pud or chocolate bombe with custard.

Apparently on Christmas Day next year (2025) DW and I will be eating this excellent Red Wine and Mushroom En Croute by Rose Elliott for the 20th time!

I really love it, it's so good.
We usually have a nut roast too.
Every year I think, should we try something different but No! It's just an essential part of Yuletide now.🎄🎄🎄

Hate nut roasts, we have a quorn roast. One year I made it into a Wellington. That was nice

MIlL and SIL just prefer to eat the trimmings and not have a specific veggie main ( there is veggie gravy and cauliflower cheese and I do veggie stuffing and potatoes anyway). TBH I’m not really bothered about the turkey and I’m not even veggie.

This.

i am not a vegetarian but I don’t eat meat.

i much prefer being able to have just more of the lovely trimmings than having a particular veggie main.

so there are always extra sprouts, parsnips, carrots, red cabbage roasties etc cooked so I can have a bigger helping!

our house always does a cheesy potato dish too which is basically potato gratin but with cheese sauce instead of cream (which honestly no one has room for so we eat it the next day!) but makes a lovely vegetarian dish if someone has room.

I will be cooking but my guests all want beef so I have to do that. I've looked up nice vegetarian things but the kids would rather have plain veggie sausages so I guess we will just have those then - there's only so much oven space for beef and yorkies and roasties and roast veg and the veggie sausages - I would love some of the nice things suggested here but time and space suggests not. 😭

I have food envy now!!!

I’m vegetarian and have had various options over the years but to be honest, like a few others on the thread, I’ve settled on the fact that I don’t really want a heavy pastry based alternative to the measly slices of turkey the others are having and I’m happy to load my plate up with all the trimmings and accompaniments, as long as the trimmings isn’t just boiled broccoli and carrots. Cauliflower cheese, creamed leeks, nice roasted parsnips, vegetarian friendly roast potatoes, and yes Yorkshire puddings belong on a Christmas dinner 😉
The PP who said “what, no protein?” made me laugh, is that really what you think about on Christmas Day? Maybe have a protein yoghurt for breakfast 😂

Makelikeatreeandleaf · 15/12/2024 06:30

I'm another who will be having no alternative. As long as there's roast potatoes, stuffing and bread sauce, I'm happy. Some of the suggestions on here sound very nice, but not with a Christmas dinner.
