Pet hamster owning

I never knew anything about hamsters when I first started with a hamster. I was gifted a cage. I hate it because it's small. I am on a mission to upgrade the home. From searching online, apparently the bare minimum in sizing is at least 100cm in length for a hamster enclosure.

I only have a limited space and I found the biggest enclosure that I could get for the size room I have and that is 85 cm in length. With 45cm in width and 45 in height.

I was feeling fairly chuffed but then I wrote it on a group and it's absolutely frowned upon. Apparantly the size I got is too small. I have a dwarf hamster by the way.

Does anyone here know anything about hamsters? Should I be cancelling my new hamster hutch in search for a new one. All for 15cm more.

I am going to struggle with 100cm enclosure and putting it in my room. There's no other space.

My hamster got loose during the week which is the reason for upgrading what I have. One of connectors broke off creating a hole. I was horrified. I came home from work and she came to greet me in the kitchen looking up at me. It was awful and I nearly had a heart attack. She was so friendly and sociable and she knew me and my voice. I Joel she's going with the journey she made with a fall and around the home. She seems to be ok now. I have her safe but it was stomach churning for a while trying to catch her and mind her.

That one looks like a good enclosure for a dwarf.

Apparantly dwarf hamsters still need 100cm in length for a cage. And also some width and height like 50 × 50.

I just don't have this space in my room and even in my home.

The one I ordered, I pushed my surroundings to get the biggest that I can and it's 85 cm in length, × 45 in width and 44 in height.

My plan is to seal those vent holes and get a tight mesh wire for the lid and the vent will be in the lid. I will close those side vents for less chewing, I think and for making more space. I don't know if I will use the hideouts that's provided here with these. I might source a different solution. Maybe just a plain rectangle wood box with a door. The upside box can be another ledge. I will figure a plan out.

Get the biggest cafe you possibly can, avoid ones with plastic tubes as these are usually marketed for kids pets and a lot are unsuitable for hamsters, if you get a dwarf hamster then the cage

Sorry posted too soon, dwarf hamsters can get away with smaller cages.
It's surprisingly how much stuff they need.

Make sure the cage is deep enough for at least 4-5. Inches of sawdust / bedding as they like to burrow. It took about 6-8 weeks to take my hamster which I brought as the kids begged me for one, it is me who does all the work / playing with him though 😂

I have this one and he seems very happy, it's deep too and he likes the upper level

I was able to get in touch with a friend who owns a hamster, same type as me. I viewers her cage which she got from zooplus. She got the smallest one and this is it from zooplus France. If you see the measurements it is 77 × 47 × 40 and it's huge and it's so big. There is a hideout, climbing structure, sandbath, wheel, tunnels, food and water bowl. It's so big.

These dimensions are a little bit smaller than mine except for the width.

So I am actually very happy with what I found despite what it says online about minimum sizing. And mine has a budget friendly price.

I was going to order the zooplus one but I didn't because the only thing holding me back was actually the glass panes.

I will be able to adapt the new one and add a shelf in it. The new one is going to be perfect in size too because the opening lid is slanted and it's going to be so much more better with the space I have.

I am doing with DIY. Maybe I can get a small plain wooden box and create a hole in the cage and attach the box like an outside cube shelf so that he gets a hide out on the outside and not taking up any floor space and then it also frees up space inside of the cage. There will be many possibilities with what I ordered.

I will waterproof the base of it and order some tightedly wooven chicken wire for the lid.
