It's an old church with balcony seating overlooking a lower floor where there would have been more seating and the pulpit etc. The lower floor is now the living room visible in pictures 2-5 and the upper floor balcony is in picture 6 - you can see the other side of the sheet covering the opening from the balcony. Presumably it's there to stop heat escaping upwards and debris falling down!

I wouldn't like to have to pay to heat it.

Every single bit of work that has been done in that place will have been bodged and will need ripping out and re doing. It will also be impossible to heat in any comfortable way. Oh and the spiders in those ceilings will be the size of your hand.
