Holiday letting- would you expect compensation?

We have been staying this week in a holiday cottage and have had a few issues;

  • no hot water for first 24 hours
  • no heating all week. They did bring some plug in heaters so we can heat some rooms but it’s either freezing or boiling
  • woken up early every day by building work next door that we were not told about. This is clearly long running work. All day there is banging and shouting and music.
This is a quiet beach location so we had hoped for a peaceful relaxing stay but I’m not sure if to ask for compensation.

thanks

Thanks for that. Yes I guess I am a bit of a lunatic. 😂But in all honesty no hot water for 24 hours wouldn't have bothered me and neither would using plug in heaters or some building noise. I guess living in rural Wales where we often go without power and heat/light etc has made me given less of a fuck about that kind of thing.

Yes, compensation hurt hearing and water. Maybe not for building work as that’s out of their control, and just one if those things.

I own a holiday let.

For hot water I'd give you 50% off for the day you were without hot water.

They provided alternative heat sources for you so as long as these gave enough heat I would hope you were happy with that. Maybe they should have offered for you to leave and be refunded the days you didn't stay.

I would have brought you some prosecco and chocolates/ cake/ fruit to say sorry.

The building work is a tough one. We actually had this once, the customer insisted we must have known about it but we honestly didn't- it had started the day they arrived. The agency offered them £100 and they refused.

There is a cottage near me that has had building work next door all summer. They were full every week. Only one guest complained and they got a refund. Nobody else mentioned it which I find odd.

I would expect a small discount for the inconvenience of the building work, and a bloody big discount for the lack of heating and hot water.

MN is very weird when it comes to things like this though and seems to think you should just accept a lack of basic amenities like hot water or heating in December - so you'll likely get some very odd responses!

This. Hot water and heat are rock-bottom basics.

I think that would be really penny pinching to only offer that. Not being able to shower whilst on holiday would be really annoying even if it was just for a day or so.

SereneFish · 12/12/2024 12:13

They sorted the heating so the issues are one day without hot water and noise from building works. I'd go in at a 30% discount and hope to get 20%. 50% is not reasonable imo.

I would expect compensation. You could stay at home with no hot water and heating. Like you say you expect better than home.

The building work and noise unless its ongoing before you got there is out of their control but I would still be cross.

In the uk and booked through an agency. Used this agency before.
yes we did pay quite a lot and feel disappointed in the stay. If it was unexpected building work I wouldn’t feel the same but it has clearly been on going for a long time so they knew about the noise issues

I know what you’re saying with this, but what are they supposed to do? Not let the property for the duration of the building work?

The OP is on holiday. Not at home having to put up the 'quirks' of where she lives in her day to day life. Massive difference! You're not the only one who lives rurally so it's not really an excuse do any of your comments.

Mirrorxxx · 12/12/2024 12:33

@User364837 i would prefer if they had told us that there was ongoing building work so we could decide whether we wanted to spend our week off next to it

FFS I don't have to excuse my comments. I stand by them. Its what I think. We are all different and for me it wouldn't have bothered me and I personally wouldn't even have thought about seeking any kind of compensation. 🙄

Overthebow · 12/12/2024 12:43

Did you raise all the issues with them whilst the ere? They should be given a chance to fix them all or offer an alternative. If you didn’t raise them, then I don’t think it’s fair to ask for compensation now. If you did and they didn’t do anything for the other complaints, and only the not good heaters for the heating then yes ask for it.

Mirrorxxx · 12/12/2024 13:24

@Overthebow yes we have raised the issues multiple times. They originally said someone woudl fix the heating on Monday but they didn’t. We had to ask for more heaters as the house was so cold.
