How much of a refund would you expect for this (hotel related)

Stayed in a hotel last night as had to be at a meeting a long way from home this morning. Not exactly cheap but not super ££ either, just a mid range 3* place. Arrived quite late, went pretty much straight to bed. Got up this morning and went to have a shower but there's no hot water! Went downstairs to ask about it and the staff said oh yeah there there's been no hot water to the rooms since Tuesday, sorry about that, should be fixed later today. I've obviously washed the best I can in cold water in the sink but my hair isn't looking it's best as I just can't stand being in a cold shower long enough to wash it properly!!

It happens. I wouldn’t ask for a refund. It’s not like you got bad service, a dirty room or a hair in your food. This is out of their control so I’d give them some grace to fix it.

Holidaywarning · 12/12/2024 07:37

They should have contacted you before check in. If they were decent they would have suggested an alternative hotel.
in these circumstances I would suggest a full refund as they were aware and chose not to disclose. If the problem was new it would be different. (I say this from the perspective of a hotel employee)
if you have left write a polite email stating the purpose of the stay and that if you had known about the water that you would have cancelled. Request a full refund due to the lack of communication and the inconvenience caused.

I disagree and I'm not really a fan of requesting refunds. The hotel knew this was an ongoing issue and didn't even warn OP. That's pretty bad and a shower is a huge part of a decently basic hotel stay.

How late exactly did you arrive? I would have expected them to have told you something like that at check in so that you had the opportunity to book something else (assuming something else available nearby at that hour).

I would definitely request a discount on the room rate, as hot water is a basic necessity in a hotel. If you're only there for one night then it's no good to you if it's being fixed after your departure.

Stbernardmum · 12/12/2024 07:44

I would be wanting a full refund, especially as they knew, it’s awful they knew and didn’t warn you.

Whyherewego · 12/12/2024 07:44

If it's been like that since Tuesday I'd have expected at check-in at least to have been informed!

GrumpyCactus · 12/12/2024 07:47

Honestly I'm not one to complain but I'd expect a full refund. They've known since Tuesday so they had ample time to forewarn you and or make alternative arrangements like a pass to a local gym with facilities etc.

Working hot water is the very basic of basic amenities.

ChrisPPancake · 12/12/2024 07:47

If they'd told you on check in would you have gone somewhere else?

It does happen and if you know someone is staying in your hotel and it's not going to be fixed in time, you tell them and give them the opportunity to stay elsewhere.

I'd be asking for at least half of the room cost back.

mistification · 12/12/2024 07:55

I'd want a full refund for that, especially since they knew about it before you arrived.

biscuitsandbooks · 12/12/2024 07:55

A full refund.

They could've contacted her BEFORE check in so she had the chance to book elsewhere.

Edingril · 12/12/2024 08:00

They should have told everyone but no i would not expect a refund

Really? I would have expected to have been told, at least at check in and given the option of a refund/complimentary meal/breakfast/discount. In that situation, unless the hotel had an attached gym with working showers/there was no room availability elsewhere then I would choose to stay somewhere different.
Overnight business hotel requirements are - comfy bed, hot shower.

BilboBlaggin · 12/12/2024 08:08

In my previous post I said that I would have expected to have been told at check in. Having thought about it, if you stayed Wednesday night, and the issue had begun on Tuesday, with no promise of a fix until Thursday, then I would have expected the hotel to contact guests who were due to arrive on Wednesday to pre-warn them and give them the opportunity to relocate to another hotel.

MonsieurBlobby · 12/12/2024 08:13

I'd want half the money back at least - maybe I could excuse it if it was a brand new issue (but would still want at all least a discount voucher/free coffee) but not telling you/offering cancellation when it's been a problem since Tuesday is ridiculous!

Christmaseason · 12/12/2024 08:17

That’s really bad, i world expect a 50% refund.

UndeniablyGenX · 12/12/2024 08:17

I think 50% would be fair.

NotSorry · 12/12/2024 08:20

I'd start by asking for a full refund, but would probably settle for 50%

PuppyMonkey · 12/12/2024 08:22

I’d have expected to be told at check in and also possibly by email earlier in the week so that you could make the decision about whether you’re wanted to continue with the booking. They didn’t tell you so you should get a full refund imho as it wasn’t the deal you booked.

Namechange09090 · 12/12/2024 08:25

We had this problem once in travelodge only for a couple of hours and they refunded half without us even asking. It's not acceptable to have no hot water.

AzurePanda · 12/12/2024 08:25

I too am not one to ask for refunds but I would in this case. They had ample time to notify guests in advance and give them the option of staying elsewhere. For a lot of occasions people staying in a hotel are banking on being able to wash their hair.

I agree with this. It's really bad service that you weren't informed.

YYURYYUCICYYUR4ME · 12/12/2024 08:27

As they knew the issue and didn't mention it, a full refund, as the room was not as advertised / fit for purpose and would you have booked a room with cold water, no! If they raised it and you were offered a reduction / apology then a reduction in cost would have been acceptable but to fail to inform, then I'd be wanting my money back.

P00hsticks · 12/12/2024 08:27

I'd go with 50% - you had a bed for the night, but hot water is not a luxury and it's really bad that the hotel didn't give you the heads up when or before you checked in.
