Had plans made with my friend from October. It’s going to a Christmas choir performance with dinner after. Am I allowed to go if I’m signed off?

yes

TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 11/12/2024 20:49

You can do what you like.

Except work.

Hayley1256 · 11/12/2024 20:49

It depends what your signed off with. MH, broken leg, op recovery I would say it's fine. Something like flu then I would say not

July24MJ · 11/12/2024 20:50

Yes ... you're signed off as not fit to work. Doesn't mean you need to be bed- or even house-bound.

But use common sense .... if you've been signed off with a bad back, sky-diving or rock-climbing is maybe not a good look.

xmascrackerr · 11/12/2024 20:51

Depends what you’re signed off with, mental health you can usually do whatever you want, but if you can’t be at work cos of back pain but out and about with friends HR will be called in.

Landlubber2019 · 11/12/2024 20:52

I can't see why not. If you off work due to mental health it will be good for you, go and enjoy!

Doggymummar · 11/12/2024 20:53

Social anxiety, probably not. Anything else so long as it's not contagious 😔 no worries

FedupMumof10YearOld · 11/12/2024 20:55

I dunno. I've always thought if you're not well enough to work then you're not well enough to do anything other than rest

can you be expected to be chained to the house though

Thewrongdoor · 11/12/2024 21:01

Yes, of course. I’m off work sick now, having broken my shoulder and my arm. I can still go out and about.

Hayley1256 · 11/12/2024 21:02

It really depends what your signed off with - as long as your not going against medical advice

TooManyCupsAndMugs · 11/12/2024 21:03

I have been signed off before on Work Related Stress. I could do anything except work, as that was what was making me ill. I went out and about, relaxed and recovered so I was able to back to work, with reasonable adjustments, a few weeks later.

TY78910 · 11/12/2024 21:04

You can but sorry to say there will be a bias towards you and your condition if anyone sees on social media etc. You will be labelled that person who's 'milking it' so if you don't care about that stuff then go. Assuming you've been signed off for something like MH.

If you've been signed off for a physical illness then I do believe you can be pulled up on company sick pay fraud if you are found to be out in Ibiza for example with a broken leg.

HPandthelastwish · 11/12/2024 21:06

I was off work as had hurt my knee, boss came and picked me up so I didn't miss the Christmas meal.

As long as whatever you are off with is not contagious, or something like anxiety where you've said you can't cope in big crowds then enjoy.

fruitbrewhaha · 11/12/2024 21:07

Of course you can go out. It would be recommended to get out the house. Naturally
if your off with d and v you wouldn’t be even if you have back pain as on a post up thread you should ventre out. It’s bad for your mental health to be housebound.

That would depend on what’s wrong with you

Of course not

It depends on what's wrong with you. When I was signed off with stress the GP told me to do things that made me feel happy although I was actually finding it difficult to leave the house at first

If you have a broken limb and someone can help you get about that's fine. If you're infectious obviously not.

Enoughofthisnow · 11/12/2024 21:23

Are you in or out of work and signed off?

If in work and someone from work see you, you might get stirrers colleagues gossiping, but even then, if your reasons for being signed off are valid, it's usually good for your mental health to socialise.

MH reasons. Horrible situation at work. Don’t feel well enough to return like this.

That's the situation I was in and GP told me to do things.

WitheringHighs · 11/12/2024 21:34

How are you supposed to get better ruminating on how bad things are, socially isolated and lonely? Of course you should go. You need to fill your emotional cup do you can have the strength to face what needs facing.

Spirallingdownwards · 11/12/2024 21:34

I hope you enjoy your lovely evening out

leia24 · 11/12/2024 21:35

Yes do what you want unless it's running a race when you're signed off with a broken leg. But be sensible about it and don't broadcast it all over social media because your colleagues won't like that

Coconutter24 · 11/12/2024 21:36

ThePerkyCoralPoet · 11/12/2024 21:28

Then getting out would probably be advised.

Is there anything you can do to help the situation at work to make it better for you?
