Tipping hairdressers

Sorry if this has been done before....
I've just been to a salon for three first time in years, having used mobile hair dressers for a long time.

It was an expensive visit, and I am genuinely pleased with the outcome. I don't have loads of money to spend on having my hair done, but it was well overdue and I felt horrible about how it was before, I don't think the previous hairdresser was doing me any favours tbh.

Anyway, the card machine gave me the option to tip the colourist and again to tip who cut my hair, giving 10%, 15% and 20% options. I'm afraid spending what I consider to be a lot and the time of year etc, I skipped through both and didn't tip.

Do you routinely tip your hairdresser? If so, how much? Should I have tipped the colourist and the stylist separately? Will they think badly of me?

I used to. But now that a simple cut and blow dry is between £65 and 120 in all the local salons, I reckon they don't need a tip. I feel odd not giving one, but it is getting ridiculously expensive to randomly tip some workers and not others.

LadyChilli · 11/12/2024 20:14

I don't although I feel awkward about it. But the cut and colour alone are cripplingly expensive these days.and even 10% would be a lot of money.

Whatevershallidowithmylife · 11/12/2024 20:31

I don’t tip and I would stop using anywhere that attempted to blackmail you into doing so which is what they have done. A DF is a hairdresser and works long hours but is extremely well financially rewarded- indeed makes more than our CEO!

I gave mine £5 last week. The cut was £30 so about 12pc I guess. I generally round it up to the nearest £10 but she was just a junior and already a flat amount.

TinselToed · 11/12/2024 20:37

I used to but the cost of a cut and blow dry at my salon (with the same stylist) has gone up from £35 a few years ago to £70.

So now I can't really afford to tip as well.

Fran2023 · 11/12/2024 20:39

Stopped tipping when the prices soared well ahead of inflation.

stripeyshutters · 11/12/2024 20:50

I give 15 to my stylist/ colourist. That's about 25p a day as I go 8 weeks.

Lizzim18 · 11/12/2024 21:22

I tip my hairdresser at Xmas but not the rest of the year.

Normallynumb · 11/12/2024 21:38

No I can't afford to anyone
I go to her every six weeks( short dyed pixie)
I do give her a bottle of wine at Christmas.

ghostbusters · 11/12/2024 21:52

I pay about £36 for a cut and blow dry. I usually round up to give her £40. Might give a little more or less depending on if my kids are in the same day as me.

NigelHarmansNewWife · 11/12/2024 21:53

I give mine money in a card at Christmas.

I used to as well, but it’s increased in price over the few years I’ve been going and I haven’t always known beforehand when there was a price rise, so now I don’t. I’ve bought chocolates and treats for his animals.

Runnersandtoms · 11/12/2024 22:10

No, and I don't really understand why people do. You are already paying them to do their job. It's different from eg restaurant waiting staff where you're paying for the food but if you get good service too you want to tip.

I'm a self-employed sole trader in a different industry. Nobody would ever tip me. They pay me to do my job. Same with plumbers, windows cleaners, electricians etc. You pay for the job to be done. You don't then tip them for doing it.

ClaudineMallory · 11/12/2024 22:12

They set the rate. I pay the rate, I don't pay extra.
It's £80, so I don't have any guilt.

New people join all the time..

it's a chat forum. It's nicer to chat to people sometimes than just read old threads. Some won't know to look first too.

I am quoting and replying to a post now deleted. So looks odd.

DottyBaguette · 11/12/2024 23:30

I stopped tipping a few years back. It's very expensive and I've actually chosen to use a home hairdresser now who sets her own rates, I don't feel the need to give extra.

shronwer · 12/12/2024 22:26

I usually tip £10 for an £80 appointment.

Greengagesummer65 · 12/12/2024 23:03

I’m the same as many others, used to but these days it’s far too expensive to add a tip as well. At first it felt a bit awkward but I don’t even think of it any more. Needs must!
