We are debating a weekend trip to Belfast or Edinburgh, and wondering if you can fly on a driving licence?

Depends on the airline

slightlydistrac · 11/12/2024 18:50

As far as I am aware, you just need some form of official photo ID but it's 10 years since I last took an internal flight, so I could be wrong.

Yes you don't need a passport just photo id.

I think Ryan air demands a passport and remember, planes can get diverted, happened a few weeks ago that an Edinburgh to London flight got diverted to Paris!

sofia543 · 11/12/2024 18:51

Thanks both, it would be either Ryanair or easyJet I think

Double check the airline policy but there's nothing outside that that would stop you. I've definitely flown to Belfast without passport before.

mitogoshigg · 11/12/2024 18:53

EasyJet accepts photo driving licences and a few other things. Dd flies on her military id

icelolly12 · 11/12/2024 18:55

You should be fine with Easyjet or Jet2 but not with Ryanair

That wouldn't require a passport though since the passengers aren't going to get chucked off in Paris.
OP, double check with the airline but I've flown internally with my driving license.

MajorCarolDanvers · 11/12/2024 18:57

Yes. I do it frequently

Driving licence is fine for Ryanair.

mynameiscalypso · 11/12/2024 18:58

I'm pretty sure you can also fly to Dublin on a driving licence. My DH had to do it the other week (flying with BA)

CleanShirt · 11/12/2024 18:59

I've flown easyJet London - Glasgow several times lately and I've only been asked to show ID if I had a checked bag - driving licence was fine.

On BA once they were just asking people to show something with their name on it, eg a bank card.

No it isn't

*when travelling with Ryanair, we generally accept 2 forms of ID:

  • A valid passport;
  • A valid National Identity Card.
We do not accept a driver's license or birth certificate for travel to any location.*

Thanks everyone, I have a passport husband doesn't, we are gonna do an online application for his passport and see if it comes in time- planning to go in January.

Back when I lived in the UK I used to fly internal flights on a weekly basis for many years. LHR or LCY to Edinburgh, Belfast, Manchester, Newcastle, Glasgow. Almost all with BA.

I brought ID with me each time but was never asked for it. That was just pre Covid so not sure if things have changed

Fupoffyagrasshole · 11/12/2024 19:21

A driving license is not fine for Ryanair

they have a blanket ban on anything but passport

FancyAnotherCuppa · 11/12/2024 19:21

I did a return trip to Edinburgh recently from London with easyJet. I took my passport with me, just in case. Flight out, we were fine with our driver licenses. Flight home nobody even asked for any form of ID.

AffIt · 11/12/2024 19:24

It also rather weirdly seems to depend on the airport.

I flew with BA from Glasgow to Heathrow with my driving licence, but wasn't allowed to fly back (that was a fun morning).

Lesson learned and passport every time from now on: I refuse to take any of them at their word.
