The most ridiculous/annoying thing you've had stolen

We were burgled a couple of months ago, whilst we were petsitting for a friend and our house was empty. They stole the usual (partners PS5, jewellery, a tin of coins we had on the kitchen windowsill, my camera) but also a pillowcase from my favourite, no longer made set, clearly to carry their loot in. Anyway today I've gone looking for a denim bag I have, that I've been sewing flag patches on for each country I've visited, as I wanted to add more to it. It's absolutely not in this house, I've looked everywhere, so they've stolen a cheap bag, with about £75 (25 or so patches at £3 each) flags, in order of when I personally visited those countries-that will be no use to anyone else.

I am cross, not least because spending another £75+ to replace this seems wasteful, but I really did love that bag.

What's the most ridiculous thing you've had stolen?

I was 19 and living in student accommodation - burglars broke in while a couple of us were in, went rooting through the fridge and stole a chocolate cake I was looking forward to eating! I thought it was my boyfriend coming home drunk, so I opened my door in a strop and they ran off.

We found our big kitchen knife in the alleyway outside the next morning 😳

XelaM · 12/12/2024 18:22

My ex stole my DVD player. Not a weird item to steal as such, but we were literally fine that morning and then I went to work, came home and he was gone and so was my DVD player 😮

Our horse's dirty feed bowl got stolen at a horse show. Clearly they couldn't afford their own £10 bowl 🥴

The most annoying things I've had stolen were 40/50 cds. All jazz cds, mostly Blue Note 're issues, so one offs.

As my adult child said, who the hell would pay money for those? Except me, of course, as I'd bought them in the first place. But my child was right. I cannot imagine there are many 1940/50s jazz fans out there.

Someone smashed my car window to steal...a box of cat food. It was Felix that used to do 'win a prize' promotions. Found the cat food in the local park ripped open. I wonder if they won a plastic cat fork 😂😂

My underwear from my washing line when I still lived at home. I was about 17 and felt so bloody violated! Small in the grand scheme of things as in costs not much to replace but a ridiculous thing to steal. Who wants second hand underwear? I suppose my only hope is that it was nicked by someone who couldn’t afford their own knickers and bras.
still annoyed about it 20 years later 😂

A perv, that’s who

bumblebee1000 · 12/12/2024 19:03

Underwear. stolen by the creepy dwarf man who lived in the flat below us in barcelona, he used to get onto a trampoline and use it to jump up and snatch the knickers.

Many years ago when I was moving into my flat, my dad propped up the stand for the baby bath against a tree while he was helping us move in. We got into the flat, realised what happened and went back to get it and it was gone. Who would want a baby bath stand? We wondered if they'd been watching us from a distance and seized their opportunity or was it just happenstance, randomly walking past and then a quick grab?

I had a carrier bag which had been full of exercise books stolen once at work. The books had been roughly emptied out of the bag and left on the floor. So rude.

Scrap metal person?

allthemiddlechildrenoftheworld · 12/12/2024 19:06

@Insidelaurashead bean bag including the polystyrene balls!! hanging on the line drying after being washed! the police eventually recovered it but I didnt want it back due to the people who had stolen it being a pair of minks!

A ham from my fridge during an open viewing when my house was up for sale.

A boyfriend stole my T'pau tape.

mummeeee · 12/12/2024 20:19

Burgled about 25+ years ago. As well as jewellery, tv etc they took the video player AND all the videos we'd recorded on. So not prerecorded ones but the ones you bought as blank tapes and recorded things from the TV onto them.

One tape had a recording of when i was on WACaday in the 1980s. So they took the recording of me on the telly! The only copy I had of course. My kids have heard the story and would love to see mum on the telly, but of course some burgler somewhere is still watching re-runs of 1980s Timmy Mallett!

YoniHuman · 12/12/2024 20:19

A Wiggles CD, when I forgot to lock my car at the park.

The brakes off my bike in the city centre.

I had the brake cables cut off my bike, parked outside the train station. Absolutely no use to anyone. Not even a good bike.

Idlechitchat · 12/12/2024 20:37

Someone broke into my car and stole a cheap eBay phone cable. I was so annoyed I had to drive around all day without being able to use hands free, play my spotify, use sat nav etc 🤬

Lillixyng · 12/12/2024 20:42

In my front garden I had a massive ugly garden planter. It was full of rubbish plants. I was about to have a garden makeover and was desperate to get rid of it. It had stood outside for 8 years. I don’t know how the managed to lift it o what they wanted it for.

Jesus wept !!!

Ja428 · 12/12/2024 20:57

I know someone who had a bag stolen at a country park place. It contained shitty nappies from 2 toddlers. Hope the thief enjoyed that.

Daisy12Maisie · 12/12/2024 20:58

My ex stole my anti stretch mark cream from the body shop after leaving me for someone else when I was pregnant. He decided I had more money than him so decided to nick things from round the house on the rare occasion he came to visit the children. The cream was expensive to me at the time as a newly single mum! Also he clearly didn't need cream for stretch marks and could have got himself any old moisturiser. I stopped him coming in the house once I noticed things were going missing. Oh and I didn't have more money than him as I was about to go on maternity leave and was on my own paying rent and bills and all the costs for our children.

Sinthie · 12/12/2024 21:34

A bra from the washing line
Make up from my work desk (used)
The Audi badge from my car

Teenagehorrorbag · 12/12/2024 23:11

I was broken into years ago while out that night. Came home to find the sitting room trashed and drawers open etc. But I think they may have been disturbed as had clearly not gone upstairs.

I was skint and had nothing of value - so no big deal. But they did take some cat food and cheese from the fridge. I assumed a homeless person with a dog, maybe?

HRTQueen · 12/12/2024 23:16

riding boots

My mum woke up to see a man standing at the end of her bed she screamed and he ran out we called the police, nothing seemed to be missing he could have easily taken out purses

few days later I noticed that my lovely leather riding boots were missing 🤬

After my Mum passed away in our local hospital some thieving bastard stole the small gold chain she was wearing off her. A couple of days later my DH went in to the ward to collect her belongings and it was nowhere to be seen. We knew she was still wearing after she’d passed because we saw her. Because my Dad was obviously very distraught we decided not to tell him.
I had enough to deal with without the trauma of an enquiry etc. I hope life dealt them some kind of karma.

We had similar, someone stole my grans wedding ring & earrings, at the hospital after she died. It's apparently quite common... or was. Mother made us promise if we were there when she died we were to remove her ring & necklace before we left her. It played on her mind for years, monetary wise they were worth practically nothing cheap tiny 9ct plain band & stud earrings. But to her they were priceless. I am also a firm believer/hoper for Karma to bite them

peebles32 · 12/12/2024 23:39

When I was a teenager I lived in a rough estate and was ashamed of our house. My grandad gave me some flowers to plant so I proudly put them in the try and make the garden look nicer. Planted them all in a row and some bugger dug them up during the night and pinched them!

peebles32 · 12/12/2024 23:42

Just remembered another. On holiday in France and went in the pool. Left my really boring sunglasses from Asda opticians on the side and someone pinched them.
I was annoyed as they were prescription glasses too. I spent the whole holiday looking for someone wearing sunglasses bumping into something as they could not see properly.

NeverSeenAFarmerOnABike · 12/12/2024 23:45

I can't imagine that stealing jewellery from a newly passed loved one would make any thief happy.

I've had bike pumps stolen before, also tyre caps from my bike wheels. Pointless vandalism and annoying.

Someone stole the meat out of my ham sandwich at work once. That was a bit weird. And a burglar stole my address book, years ago, in the days before the internet, when I was living a pretty restless peripatetic life. There were some people I never got in touch with again as a result, because neither party had a way of finding each other.

I don't know if anyone else has said this but OP and others who've had cheap bags/pillowcases stolen, burglars do that so they have something to carry all the small high value items in.
