Christmas pudding and dessert alternatives

I'm interested to know what sweet indulgent nosh folk go for if, like me they simply do not like Christmas pudding, Christmas cake, mince pies and trifle. It's true, none of this traditional tuck is to my taste, believe it or not. I'm not looking for suggested alternatives for me personally but I would like to know what else is out there (for fussy ***)! Can't be just me.

Chocolate log? Either with cream or ice cream ?
I make one every year for my adult son who is another like you who doesn’t like Christmas pudding .

TheTecknician · 10/12/2024 20:21

Of course, yes. There is always chocolate in its many forms.

I always do an apple crumble for Christmas dessert

Pumpkin pie?

I do a baked chocolate pie sometimes on Christmas Eve.

Something like cheesecake or banoffee pie is handy if you'd like something that's best prepared in advance and doesn't need any reheating.

A Yule log or meringue roulade look quite festive. Lots of flavour options available and supermarkets usually have various options in.

Sticky toffee pudding or crumble or a fruit pie works well if youre looking for something that goes with custard / cream, similar the more traditional Christmas puddings.

I'm trying a white chocolate cheesecake this year. My husband loves Christmas pudding but he's the only one in our house who does, so he has Christmas pudding and we have something else. Other years I've made pavlova, trifle, and my family have also made desserts like baileys cheesecake or chocolate mousse.

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 10/12/2024 20:39

Chocolate log, lemon tart and my mum always makes trifle.

CoastalCalm · 10/12/2024 20:41

I’m not a fan of chocolate desserts so for me a lemon tart or a fruit loaded pavlova is heavenly

TheTecknician · 10/12/2024 20:48

Are fruit breads like stollen and panettone popular in the UK? They always look a bit dry and dusty to me - probably too much icing sugar.

Lemon roulade? Light and refreshing.

We have profiteroles for me and watermelon for DS1.

Apple strudel with ice cream or custard
Profiteroles and melted chocolate
White chocolate and berry cheesecake

5 years ago I introduced a mint vienetta for Xmas day pudding. All four of us love it!

OatFlatWhiteForMePlease · 10/12/2024 20:54

We had This last new year but with dark chocolate instead of white. It was delicious.

Trifle is essential in our house too.

A non christmas suet pudding. No booze, no nuts, no or less spice. Not dark and horrid and dense.
Basically a spotted dick, usually with some grated apple in it as well as the sultanas.

pizzaHeart · 10/12/2024 21:00

We did jelly, cheesecake, Panna cotta (Aldi), fruit tart, apples and pears in wine sauce, profiteroles.

Meadowfinch · 10/12/2024 21:02

I normally serve two desserts.

Mince pies filled with home-made mincemeat (less sugar, more whisky), and a tiramisu. Double cream with both.

Followed by amaretto and whisky.

worcesterpear · 10/12/2024 21:02

No, stollen and pannetonne are not particularly popular, especially after Christmas dinner, they would be too dry. Pavlova/roulade with berry fruits, mandarin cheesecake or a yule log would be my suggested alternatives. I do like christmas pudding but don't usually feel like it after a big meal.

Sibilantseamstress · 10/12/2024 21:02

A fancy jelly as a second option. For people who can’t face something as rich as Xmas pudding aftera big meal, it is just right.

We don't tend to go for the traditional Christmas desserts either. Our favourites are sticky toffee pudding (the Delicious magazine recipe is fab), Nigella's old-fashioned black cherry cheesecake (a no-bake one), the Hairy Bikers' Christmas pannacotta and Nigella's Chardonnay raspberry jellies. We have at least 2 of those on offer, plus Nigel Slater's light fruit cake with ground almonds which isn't like a Christmas cake at all. If it were just my choice, there would be Scandinavian style rice pudding with cherries, or otherwise a pavlova (raspberry is the best, but they are out of season in winter of course). Maybe I need to ring the changes this year!

TheSandgroper · 10/12/2024 21:38

Steamed syrup pudding for my family. With raspberries or rhubarb to go with.

Puffinshop · 10/12/2024 21:40

Danish Christmas rice pudding - Risalamande. It's really good. Creamy rice pudding with almonds and cherry sauce.

Puffinshop · 10/12/2024 21:43

A panettone bread and butter pudding is also delicious 😋

UtterlyOtterly · 10/12/2024 21:44

When I was a child, we always had gooseberry crumble. A portion of gooseberries would be frozen and kept especially. Served with custard, of course.

We don't really have puddings at all now. I think we had bananas and chocolates last year. No visiting guests to impress though!
