Teacher suspects dyslexia and dyscalculia

Hello,

Posting here hoping for a good response.

My son might have dyslexia and dyscalculia. How do I get him assessed for both?

He is in year 6. The SENCO lead has completed a screening test for dyslexia which classes him as potentially having moderate dyslexia. I was in the processes of arranging for a formal dyslexia assessment with a qualified assessor.

However, his maths teacher now also suspects dyscalculia. The assessor, who I had hoped would do the dyslexia, isn't qualified to do dyscalculia assessment.

Do I need to get 2 seperate assessments done?

I would welcome any help / advice. He is in year 6 and we'd like to sort this out before he goes into secondary school.

Until this year the school haven't flagged any concerns. He was on track and is very well behaved in the classroom.

Do I need to get an ECHP in place for him? I don't know where to start.

You need an educational psychologist assessment, will cost anything from £500 up. It's relatively easy to check if they are qualified as you can check their registration status online. He doesn't need an EHCP unless the school isn't able to meet his needs through their resources for additional support which doesn't sound like it's the case. My DS has Dyslexia and Dyspraxia, he gets a laptop in school but thats about it. The process of being assessed was very helpful though and it's reassuring for him to know why he finds certain things difficult and also that his difficulties don't relate to intelligence or effort. (Although he is now a grumpy teen so lack of effort is also a problem!)

That's great to hear. Is the ECHP for those kids who need help over and above what a school would normally provide, like learning support assistances?

Get the assessments done, unlikely you will need an EHCP. IME with dyslexia / dyscalculia school doesn't actually have resource or inclination to care. Learn about what you can do to support your
Child.

For Dts one uses
A reader pen and laptop, the other has pink paper and overlays that we buy from the dyslexia store on line.

Oh and dyslexia doesn't equate to bad behaviour.

Hi - I got the impression, mainly through Mumsnet and FB, that the kids who misbehave would get more attention / teacher time. Not suggesting that dyslexia causes misbehaviour.

Surely, the school will provide some help for a child with a dyslexia diagnosis?
