GP for baby?

I've had a horrid lurgy the last few days with a hacking cough and temperature. The day before yesterday my 4 month old baby caught it - on off temp, cough and generally unhappy. Last night was appalling- I would settle him in my arms and then he would wake 20 minutes later screaming in apparent pain. I've not slept at all. Refused to feed (he's EBF and usually doesn't stop eating) and would have to bounce back to sleep, but always awake again screaming within 20 minutes. He hasn't had a temperature since yesterday morning and I gave him both calpol and nurofen in the night but neither seemed to help. It's like something is hurting him but I don't know what it is. He's had a couple of small feeds but nothing as much as usual. He is still having wet nappies. No rash that I can see.

Do I need the GP? Conscious of how busy they are this time of year (and of how full of other germs that waiting room is likely to be...)

Yep you need an appointment. Mostly just to rule out some thing more serious or an ear infection.

Likely is an ear infection as that makes sucking and swallowing painful. LO not eating at all is the biggest worry and what you need to prioritise talking about to the GP as DS is at risk of dehydration. Keep a close eye on numbers of wet nappies and if they are as full/heavy as normal. Also his fontanel..if it is sunken its a bad sign

Straight to the GP today

When my eldest had an ear infection he was constantly tugging at his ear so I didn't think it was that. I've just filled out the online form so hopefully we will get seen this morning.

Your GP practice is very efficient! I've been trying for 30 mins to even join the queue to speak to the receptionist (no e-consult option sadly).

Any time I took my kids to the GP when they were little little the GPs were always happy to see me, even if it was just to reassure me. They said they don't want parents worrying at home. Hope you all feel better soon.

My 2 year old and I have similar. Luckily just a virus, but so horrible for him. My GP surgery is also great with children. Hope you both feel better soon.

They're fantastic. I've never waited longer than an hour for them to respond to any e consult.

All checks fine, no ear infection. Hoping last night was a one off tbh as I'm not sure I can take another night of being woken by screaming every 15 minutes...

Did you have a blocked nose with your illness? That can make it hard for babies to breastfeed and sleep. I’d definitely recommend a calpol diffuser.
