5 year old - cold / flu high temp

Hi, just after middle of the night advice. I will preface this by saying I can be an anxious parent!

Dd who's coming up 6 has come down with this cold / flu that's going around. She's been quieter than normal and eating less but not great worrying symptoms apart from high temperature.

She woke not long ago for a drink so I checked temperature again it was 39.6. I noticed her breathing sounded faster than normal. Gave calpol and swapped duvet for a light blanket. Almost an hour later and her temp is now 39.7. Counted breathing and well within normal range.

Should I be letting her sleep it off or have her checked? She was checked over earlier today as complaining of pain in her nose and I was concerned it was a cold sore. Nurse couldn't see anything only noted high temp and enlarged tonsils however she does have naturally large tonsils.

If temperature is that high you can alternate calpol and neurofen (4 hours apart) - I found neurofen to be more effective for mine. Also giving them a bath at normal temperature water always did the trick for mine when I was struggling to get their temperature down.

edit: if you’re unsure call 111

Have you got any ibuprofen she could have? I would just keep an eye on her if she's settled and if her temperature is still high in the morning but if your worried phone 111 for some advice.. hope she gets well soon nothing worse x

She's had a couple of doses of ibuprofen through the day. 1 at 12.30pm and again at 7.15pm. I was thinking give ibuprofen and see if makes a difference.

If I ring 111 I expect they will advise us to have her checked but she was literally checked at 5pm. I just don't like the thought or dragging her out for them to say the same as already been told at 5pm and no need for any treatment.

It's a minefield as a lot of online info, including the NHS orange book suggests not to worry about bringing a temperature down however on any occasions we have been in via 111 and her temperature has been that high they have literally given her medication there and then to try and bring it down.

Is she sleeping?

Dextybooboo · 10/12/2024 02:55

Yes she is.

Mum is a nurse and when my kids temperatures are close to 40 she always gives them medication and gets them in the bath to lower it. You can still call 111 tell them she was checked at 5pm but worried about temp.

Yes she is.

If the last dose of neurofen you gave her was 7.15pm and the calpol was at least 3 hours ago I would give her neurofen wait 45 min if no change give her a bath if still no change I would call 111 - this is what I would do with my kids.

Dextybooboo · 10/12/2024 02:59

The calpol was only an hour ago. Thanks for all the advise, really appreciate it.

No worries - if you don’t want to wake her up to bath her maybe try sponging her forehead and wrists with tepid water to see if that helps.

Dextybooboo · 10/12/2024 03:05

Thanks. It's come down slightly now to 39.4 so least thermometer is orange rather than red haha!

It’s very stressful when they are unwell. Hope she get better soon só you can get some well deserved rest.

Doesn't help I'm a worrier where DD is concerned. Common sense tells me she's sleeping and when she has roused for a drink and the loo she has been OK and with it (although obviously under the weather). But I doubt myself and dp has health anxiety which impacts any rational thoughts I have. I'll keep an eye on her. Thanks again.
