Running and stress incontinence, the answer!

Mid 50s, menopausal, on hrt patches and no symptoms. Vaginal births and some stress incontinence but not too bad day to day as long as I don't walk with a full bladder. However, I do like to run and since menopause I can only run first thing in the morning before having a drink of water - otherwise I will be peeing myself for the last of my 3 miles even if my bladder isn't full.

And then.... I happened to read a letter in the letter pages of a national newspaper. I don't even recall what it was in response to. But in the letter she said that the pressure on the bladder (or on the tube that takes urine from the bladder) from wearing a mooncup (period device made of silicon that catches the blood, that you then wash and reuse) for her, prevented stress incontinence.
So I tried it and it's bloody marvellous!!! I just insert it before I run, then remove, wash and store.
No leaking AT ALL.
I just wanted to share the info for all of you who perhaps have mild stress incontinence (perhaps it works for more serious situations, but I don't know that, worth a try if you have one still in the drawer as I did from previous use as a period product - and a brilliant product form that it was as well.)

Has anyone else tried this, is it common knowledge but yet another thing women don't yet talk about??? Wishing I had known about five years ago...

I’m glad you’ve found something which works for you but am a bit depressed that far too many British women seem to have fallen for the falsehood that urinary incontinence is just a normal part of being a woman. None of my US / Aus / European friends think the same way, they push to get it sorted out. Weeing yourself when you’re even basically active isn’t acceptable! Go to your GP and don’t let them fob you off.

@ComtesseDeSpair

Unfortunately the surgery that you could have to sort it turned out to be seriously flawed, I'm glad it didn't opt for it a few years ago. Perhaps British women are just more open about it?

So where did you hear about this? I will be telling my 50-something female GP when I see her...

@ComtesseDeSpair I totally agree with you. It's an absolute disgrace that women in the UK are expected to put up with urinary incontinence.

Unfortunately the NHS isn't interested in helping women. I have seen countless NHS GPs, Consultants and physios, and they're not interested in offering anything to help. I have asked, pleaded, begged. Nothing.

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 09/12/2024 23:49

@ComtesseDeSpair out of interest, what are women outside the UK offered to sort urinary incontinence?

I tried a tampon. Same effect I think. Will try moon cup. Thanks
