Carbon monoxide - alarm not triggering?

In a bit of a quandry with this one.
Bought a drafty old house a few months ago and to keep it warm have been regularly using the open fire in the lounge.

The chimney breast goes up through DD's room and there is a regular strong smell of smoke in there although I can't see anything.

A chimney sweep came round a few weeks ago and was a bit stumped. He said the chimney and flue seem ok but possibily smoke is seeping through the brickwork somehow. He wouldn't give me a definitive answer of whether I should be using the fire.

I am obviously concerned about lighting the fire although desperate for its heat.
There is a CM alarm in DD's which has never gone off but is that a reliable indicator of toxic poisons?
I also seem to have a permanent headache which I put down to stress but am now worried it's something more sinister

I would definitely get another CO alarm in case there is a problem with the one you have.

Did your chimney sweep do a smoke bomb test? That will often tell you if there are gaps between your chimneys. If a smoke bomb let off in one fireplace results in smoke coming out of more that one chimney you have breach between chimneys.

Thank you...no mention of a smoke bomb test Confused
I will order another monitor right now.
The one I have seems to function ok (have tested it) but I guess that doesn't necessarily mean to sensor is what it should be
