Christmas Eve meal

Please help. DHs family are staying with us over Christmas, arriving Christmas Eve. Christmas Day is obviously sorted but I've agreed to make dinner Christmas eve and have no idea what to make. His father won't eat onions, mushrooms, peppers or fish. His sister wont eat red meat, his niece won't eat anything that isn't a chicken nugget. I've got no clue! Take away would be ideal but we live in the arse end of nowhere and none will be open. I've suggested jacket potatoes and a 'toppings bar' but that's been shut down, no one will eat a lasagne which is my other go to for big groups!
I was thinking buffet with nice nibbles but we're doing that Christmas Day and Boxing Day so that's out too!
Any ideas?!

If they’re all arriving Christmas Eve, ask them to all bring a dish with them. Sorted!

Pizzas and pasta bake and salad, nuggets for the child

Fire86 · 08/12/2024 16:18

Jacket potatoes with a choice of toppings sounds good. Otherwise as others have said, pizzas, or something like chicken curry and rice, chilli and rice, pasta bake…. Or one of the above and a big dish of chicken nuggets as well?? All of those can be cooked without onions etc. Or pick up a few different bits from “cook” and hopefully everyone will see something they can eat?

Pizza delivery!

TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 08/12/2024 16:21

This thread has made me want a jacket potato…

I might go and make one.

ClicketyClickPlusOne · 08/12/2024 16:25

Big chicken and leek pie

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 08/12/2024 16:26

Load of sausages
roasted mushrooms, onions and peppers (mushroom hater can pick out the mushrooms)
baguettes

Assemble hot sausage baguettes with vege and a variety of sauces (mustard, bbq, chilli)
salad
coleslaw
maybe some roasted corn on the cob

loropianalover · 08/12/2024 16:28

I certainly wouldn’t be putting myself out to provide a meal! Big pasta bake into the oven, garlic bread or fresh rolls, salad bowl, chips, & a few nuggets for the child.

daffodilandtulip · 08/12/2024 16:29

M&S takeaway type meals, each choose their own.

Christmaseason · 08/12/2024 16:33

I like the hot dogs idea.

mumtotwo11 · 08/12/2024 16:33

Pulled chicken in the slow cooker with tacos/wraps salsa cheese etc ? Wedges /chips

Frozen nuggets /chips for niece

minipie · 08/12/2024 16:34

Seconding pasta bake of some kind.

Tomato/mozzarella pasta bake is popular with most people including fussy ones. Use garlic not onion in the tomato sauce

Minestrone and nice bread could work too - hearty but not too stodgy before the big day.

Or a mild curry? Tricky without onions though. A Thai curry might work

Pandasnacks · 08/12/2024 16:36

Surely if you are cooking you get to decide? Jacket potatos for all, anyone who doesn't want it can sort themselves out

Mmmkaay · 08/12/2024 16:36

Coq au vin pie with mash and veg. Nuggets for small child.

stackhead · 08/12/2024 16:37

Pulled chicken/pork (just dump in a slow cooker) rolls. Various extra toppings as necessary like apple sauce, stuffing etc.. chips or wedges on the side if you fancy.

Whaleandsnail6 · 08/12/2024 16:41

A big mac and cheese with lazy (pre washed and cut) salad and garlic bread (id even use pasta bake jars for dor the sauce snd bung extra cheese in top

I'd want something that I just chuck in an oven dish and leave for Christmas eve, I wouldnt want any sort of faff.

If people dont like it, I'm sure there will be crisps and nibbles they can eat

Runskiyoga · 08/12/2024 16:46

I'd do chicken and beef burgers in posh buns with fat fries and home made coleslaw. Do niece some chicken nuggets.

Skyrainlight · 08/12/2024 16:46

You don't want to be missioning when you are doing Christmas the next day, I'd get some freezer pizzas and make a giant salad - 'no onions' can have margarita, niece can have nuggets and pizza, and you can not work like a crazy person for people who have attitude.

CactusPat · 08/12/2024 16:50

Chicken thai curry?
Fondue?
pasta, bread, salad?
Egg and chips?
Soup, toasties etc

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 08/12/2024 16:51

We have crispy duck and pancakes, the ones that don't like could order what they do?

ouchwtf · 08/12/2024 16:55

Going on your sample of one, and assuming your kids are kids or at the oldest young adults, what makes you think your kids will be more successful than you – coming from an unstable (going by your description) working class (or more accurately precariat) home?

Edit - lol - bizarre mumsnet inter-dimensional brain fart. I have no idea how I ended up on this thread!

AtleastitsnotMonday · 08/12/2024 16:58

Chicken parmigiana. Breaded chicken escalopes (buy them if you don't want to bread your own), tomato sauce, mozzarella and spaghetti. Chicken nugget eater get a plain breaded escalope.

Delatron · 08/12/2024 16:58

I think pizza too- either make the dough and then set out all the different toppings. Or (since you appear to be hosting and doing all the cooking over Christmas?) buy them in.

They don’t get to shut anything down and sound incredibly fussy.

I also like the pulled chicken idea with rolls and salad.

Chipsahoy · 08/12/2024 17:00

I’d do pizza, salads, chopped veg and dip and nuggets for the child.

WonderingWanda · 08/12/2024 17:00

Sausage and mash
Some sort of pasta bake
