I have just read this. And was glad. But will he be replaced by something even worse. I wonder where he's gone.

Good riddance. I hope he gets punished for his crimes/murders but don't know how likely that is.

bloodynaps · 08/12/2024 09:13

I wonder which country he went into exile. Would we see his wife shopping in Harrods?

mizu · 08/12/2024 09:13

Pretty incredible news. I was with Syrian friends yesterday and they were very emotional. For some of them it means the possibility of being able to visit and see family there who they haven't seen for many years.

squirrelnutcartel · 08/12/2024 09:15

Probably in London 🙄

MsPoppoff · 08/12/2024 09:42

Do we know how things are likely to be for women there now? Glad Assad is gone, obviously, but will this be Taliban mark 2?

fixingmylife · 08/12/2024 17:52

I just heard on the news that Assad has reached Moscow! I wish I could find out more. It's very worrying actually, although obviously I'm pleased he has been overthrown.

Hoppinggreen · 08/12/2024 17:59

Of course its a good thing for the Syrian people but I know some Libyans and while they were not sad to see the back of Gadaffi life for a lot of people was better under him - not with regards to freedom but food, water, etc. They wouldn't want him back but they left AFTER his regime fell as it was just chaos. I would prefer to be able to feed my children and not be at risk of bombing rather than have the vote if that were a choice.
I fear we may see the same in Syria and hope it doesn't end up like Afghanistan.
Often these dictators are too busy to concern themselves with ensuring that girls can't access schools for example and Assads wife was partly raised in The UK I believe so there were some protections from religious and cultural extremism.
I am not sorry his regime has gone and I hope he is punished (unlikely) but I worry what will replace him

Interesting - I’ve seen a report saying he is in Abu Dhabi

Depositless · 08/12/2024 18:01

Assad the coward who without Hezbolla, Hamas and the Russians was a weed of a man.

What a spineless weasel fleeing when his allies abandoned him and he didn’t have the guts to face his own people.

Interesting indeed. It was LBC that I heard that he had reached Moscow... unless I misheard it...

Neolara · 08/12/2024 18:03

The people who have kicked him out are basically Al Qaeda according to the BBC so I think it's unlikely this is a good thing.

Lookatthem · 08/12/2024 18:09

I read that at one point he was an ophthalmologist in London before returning to Syria.
Anyone work with him?
What was he like?

Pedallleur · 08/12/2024 19:29

In Moscow but his money will be in Switzerland. No doubt will have a home in poss Paris, London, Gstaad or Dubai or all 4. Other countries/cities/tax havens available.

squirrelnutcartel · 08/12/2024 19:31

Ha ha a new playmate for putin. They can do crazy dictator things together 😂

Syrian Tyrant Assad has fled the country
Pedallleur · 08/12/2024 20:02

No use to Putin when they are not in power. Same with Western powers when their allies are no longer in power. Shah of Iran, Noriega etc

WinterMorn · 08/12/2024 20:09

I am not sure that we could stop Asma al Assad coming to the UK as she is British born citizen.

I get your concerns - have been reading today though about shortages of bread for some time and hardship for the Syrian people. All with Assad and his garage full of luxury cars. Coward like so many other dictators. Hoping things will get at least a bit better. Pleased at another setback for Putin too. Assad is supposedly in Moscow now. Lame duck for them to host.

Havalona · 08/12/2024 20:22

Assad always looked to me like a chinless wonder.

As for Asma being allowed to enter Britain on her British passport, her citizenship could be revoked under the Deprivation of Citizenship rules, due to war crimes. I'm only speculating here, but the ability to do this exists, depends on the reason I suppose.

Anyone know of anyone who has had their citizenship revoked?

Exactly - why haven't we given her the same treatment that we were so keen to mete out to Shamima Begum? I know whose citizenship I would rather we cancelled.

Maybe that will happen if she tries to enter Britain. Who knows? But I would certainly hope so.

Username056 · 08/12/2024 20:41

I doubt very much that she would try to enter the UK. They are stuck in Moscow now. Dependent on Putin for their safety.

Pedallleur · 08/12/2024 21:53

Someone will give them a home and yes will admit Mrs Assad because it's diplomacy and she will have an expensive law firm representing her. She isn't afaik charged with war crimes etc so will be able to move freely. Also she can be an acceptable face of negotiation. Britain and France have both provided residence to foreign dictators, despots, generals and warlords. This won't be any different

Viviennemary · 12/12/2024 17:01

I hope Assad will,be brought to trial for war crimes and genocide.
