Experiences of striking / industrial action

It looks like my workplace is headed towards strike action soon, and I wondered whether anyone would share any experiences of this?

It's all new to me, but I support the reasons for the strike.

If the strike is called off mid-strike, how quickly do you need to go back to work? Presumably the next day?

Yes, as soon as the strike is called off, you go back to work. I've been on strike many times, done picketting, leaflets, banners etc. it's up to you how involved you want to get. You can just stay at home.

I think I'd like to play an active part, but unfortunately I live too far way to do this.

@KateDelRick, do you mean you'd go back to work the same day?

Usually what happens is that an agreement is reached by either mediation or management for the strike to end.
It wouldn't be part of the way through a day, so you'd get notification that you would return to work on a certain date. An indefinite strike would be unusual, usually it's a one day or two days targeted strike action on repeat.

That's fine, just stay at home. Sometimes the union puts out a call for various kinds of support within the law, but it's a personal choice.

Thanks, it's good to have a bit more knowledge about what might happen.
