Catching lots of colds

Frowningprovidence · 07/12/2024 08:56

My DH gets a cold every 3 weeks. He gets a temperature, starts coughing, sneezing, headache. It lasts 3-5 days. He is then well for 15 ish days. Then he is ill again.

It's been a year like this.

Anyone got any fab ideas of how to stop this.

Has he been to the doctor and asked for a blood test? It could be a severe vitamin deficiency that is affecting his immune system. Or he could just be unlucky and is catching everything going!

He's obviously really run down. He needs to see a Dr and have some blood tests, especially Vitamin D.

He hasn't had vitamin tests, but he does have high blood pressure which they are sorting out.

I might just make him take vitamin D

VitaminD3 - 4,000 iu (upper level recommended by NHS)
Zinc
Minimal sugar & alcohol
Eat healthy - meat, fish, vegetables, fermented foods like kefir & sauerkraut. Cut out all UPF
Get plenty of good quality sleep (7-8 hrs & no screens or thrillers/horror/news media before bedtime)
Minimise stress levels

How is his ‘circadian’ health?

Does he spend all day indoors? Does he get any sunlight (even on a cloudy day)? Does he block blue light at night? Does he move his body? How is his sleep? All these things impact our health in winter particularly.

All this affects heart health as well as immune health too (especially blood pressure). This link explains it a bit more (also have a look at the work of Sarah Kleiner). https://www.bhf.org.uk/informationsupport/heart-matters-magazine/research/circadian-rhythm-heart

Does circadian rhythm affect the heart?

What is the link between our body's daily cycles and our heart health? Dr Phoebe Kitscha explores the exciting research inspired by zebrafish.

Very poor I'd say.

@Frowningprovidence much to work on then. That’s good news! Depends on how willing he is to do something about it though. Some men get unbelievably stubborn as they age…

OhBeAFineGuyKissMe · 07/12/2024 10:14

Any chance one of the cold was covid? It is known to upset your immunity so you can end up catching everything going.

mindutopia · 07/12/2024 10:57

Vitamin C, zinc and vitamin D in fairly high doses and echinacea. And then sensible things like not drinking alcohol and going to bed at a reasonable time.

Dh (who doesn’t do any of the above) has pretty much been sick since August. I have cancer and am immunocompromised. I haven’t been sick once in that time despite lying next to him while he coughs all night.
