I'm probably going to have to cancel DS's party, aren't I?

South coast England (Brighton-Hastings). Just woken up with the gusts, but it doesn't take much to rouse me. I know safety is paramount, but I'm worried we're going to have to cancel DS's party that's set for tomorrow (Sunday) at 10.30.

We're only yellow here, Met office says 45 winds, but he and all his friends are SEND. He'll be devastated if no-one comes because of the weather, but if we cancel, he'll never forgive me. We're hiring a cinema as well, so that'll be £120 gone too. And the cinema where it is only has one screen, so there'll likely not be the chance to reschedule this side of Christmas. FFS.

Just when I thought we'd managed to get a party sorted and no bloody illnesses were striking to blight it, which is what normally happens. WWYD?

Hmm, call the cinema tomorrow and ask if there is any chance they will close due to storm
Text or call the parents of the attendees and ask them how they feel about travelling in the storm
If they are local and happy to go ahead then fine
If above but cinema has a chance of closing make a back up plan (home cinema with movie on and snacks etc)
Are all children SEND who are attending? Their parents might also appreciate trying to go ahead despite the wind too
Really hope it works out for you and happy birthday to your little one x

I’d still be going ahead for an inside cinema party. We’re off the cinema tomorrow and hasn’t crossed my mind not to go

FreshLaundry · 07/12/2024 04:11

Great advice here. I've only cancelled the activity that involves travelling by bike as I didn't fancy cycling. If parents are local and have cars they'll likely still come.

OAPapparently · 07/12/2024 04:12

You say Sunday (unless it’s a typo), I think the storms are meant to be calmer by then aren’t they? I wouldn’t cancel if Sunday. Even if not many show up it will be a fun (but expensive!) experience for you child to have the cinema to themselves.

Mamathulu · 07/12/2024 04:22

Thanks for the speedy replies! Yes, I'm probably just having a wobble because it sounds a bit windy out there at the moment. I will call the cinema and text the other parents though, if nothing else just to confirm that we're hoping to go ahead with it.

Good luck with it all. By Sunday it should probably be ok, if predictions are correct. Fingers crossed for you. Btw I’m in Hampshire and the wind has just woken me up. I hate it! Terrifies me. 🙁

Bigearringsbigsmile · 07/12/2024 04:50

I wouldn't even be thinking about cancelling! Just go ahead with your plans, it'll be fine by then.

Skate76 · 07/12/2024 04:57

Why in earth would you cancel an indoor party because of the wind 🤷‍♀️

Because some areas there is a warning not to travel unless absolutely necessary and a parry isn't necessary.

Admittedly, we are in a red area but I wouldn't be going out until the warning has past for a party.

But the warnings are for Saturday, the party Is Sunday

Fuckitydoodah · 07/12/2024 05:34

No, don't cancel. I'm pretty sure it's meant to have blown through by that time tomorrow. It won't be as bad as today, plus you're doing an indoor activity.

Snowpatrolling · 07/12/2024 05:53

Weather will be fine on Sunday, I’m right in the red zone and it’s not to bad as far as I can make out. I still have everything standing in the garden!! Storm will pass at around 11ish this morning.

itsgettingweird · 07/12/2024 05:55

I wouldn't cancel for Sunday.

Any weather warnings are for overnight tonight and Saturday.

It is sounding bad (Portsmouth area).

Wales have cancelled things for Saturday because it's red.

We still have an indoor event running today (Saturday) and tomorrow it will hopefully all be gone.

Please don't worry (or cancel) Flowers

Quite.

Because the media likes to make us all terrified about any weather event these days? Hence all the threads on this.

And people wonder why they have anxiety.

40-50 mph winds are pretty normal in winter OP.

AitkenDrum1970 · 07/12/2024 06:15

It’s my son’s birthday today, we’ve cancelled going out for lunch today as we have red weather warning. Party tomorrow with friends going ahead.

Allswellthatendswelll · 07/12/2024 06:23

I think it's mainly outdoor things that have been cancelled. Cinema should be fine.

Zanatdy · 07/12/2024 06:25

If its yellow and just gusts sure it will still be open and people can travel. It’s the same here and the gusts are quite infrequent at the moment

But not in areas with only 45 mph winds. We often walk to school in that along exposed coast line. It will be fine inside.

It should be much better tomorrow and they will be inside. If tomorrow the cinema closes or you are warned not to travel you will have to cancel. I do hope it goes ahead!

hello101000 · 07/12/2024 06:42

I'm always thrilled to have an indoor party to take my kids to when there's a storm! Hate trying to entertain them in bad weather, but also hate wasting a day of nice weather at a kids party, so it's a win win!

The worst of it should be over by tomorrow morning anyway. Maybe the odd person will feel nervous travelling in the windy weather but generally I think you'll be fine.

rainbowstardrops · 07/12/2024 06:46

I'm in a similar area to you in the south east and the winds are supposed to drop quite a lot by tomorrow. Still windy but not the 60mph gusts we've got right now. I wouldn't cancel unless the cinema says it's a problem.

BendingSpoons · 07/12/2024 06:49

I'm a bit more inland than you. DS has a party to go to this morning (soft play). We're planning on going but will likely drive instead of walking. I don't think you need to cancel.

PicturePlace · 07/12/2024 06:52

I wouldn't cancel, it's a party inside a cinema? Give your head a wobble!
