Not sure what I think about this. I mean obviously the man is a complete charlatan and despicable, but she was a fully grown adult who chose to believe obvious nonsense and chose to stop taking her insulin.

he might be morally responsible, but it feels wrong that he’s criminally responsible for the actions of another adult.

He’s abusing his position and causing death by being manipulative, he also discouraged them from getting medical advise. He has abused his trust and privilege and should absolutely be accountable.

BlueSilverCats · 06/12/2024 18:31

He does deserve to be jailed. A 6 yo boy also died based on his advice.

It might be obvious nonsense to you and me, but people sometimes are desperate or possibly not very bright/well educated /are struggling with conventional medicine.

Topseyt123 · 06/12/2024 18:42

If course he deserves to be imprisoned. Two insulin dependent diabetics are dead because of his manipulative bullshit, which seems frankly to be just quackery.

They were vulnerable people and he manipulated them. He had a duty of care if they were participating in his workshops and he failed abysmally in that.

Presumably the 6 year old had parents who should have known better?

why isn’t the church of jehova’s witnesses criminally liable for saying people shouldn’t have blood transfusions?

He's criminally responsible for his own actions. Similarly, it's against the law to try to persuade others to do racist things etc.

HermioneWeasley · 06/12/2024 19:00

Ah ok, I saw a news article about it and have now read the detail. She fell ill at the workshop anfter stopping insulin and he didn’t get medical attention, I completely understand why he was criminally liable for that.

It's a good question. There is an obvious difference between the two belief systems but not a difference between the results.

The belief systems in JW is that you will die but there is a better place. No real receipt around the death itself. If the man in the OP knew better, he actively tried to kill them.

This is just going to be another thread full of people offensively ignorant about Type 1 diabetes. Yes he should be prosecuted.

JW’s don’t dress it up as medical advice - that’s the difference.
