Career pivot for teacher

OH is a science teacher. We are late 20s. Living in a busy city. Everything is getting expensive. OH has been overlooked for any opportunities internally abs is tired of teaching. OH Wants to work in a lab but the jobs he has applied for want more experience within the niche, or they don’t get back.

What jobs can you think of that’s a natural pivot for a science teacher?

He could be a research technician but they're not amazingly paid. I think he would struggle to compete with someone with research experience if he wants to work in a lab. He could go back to uni and do a masters or PhD if he really wants to get into research?

PlantDoctor · 06/12/2024 00:37

I mean a research masters, not the PGCE I'm sure he has.

What discipline did he study?

Would he consider a role with a pharmaceutical company?

Lots of teachers are moving into the civil service as they're used to the poor pay for the qualifications required, counter productive ways of working and hatred from the general public and media but at least its not teaching.

Do a keyword search for science and EO, HEO and SEO grades, HEO is the most likely entry grade but worth including one either side as well.

If he has a science degree he might be a good match for a pharmaceutical company, college lecturer (FE college), he could work in a science centre - like the natural history museum, university technician…though not sure some of those would pay as well at teaching. He could consider moving schools for promotion?

@PlantDoctor - exactly that - a lot of the research jobs he has applied for have picked up on the lack of research experience - there’s a lot on things like stem cell research etc. And yes, he has a research masters.

He specialises in biology.

@ShrubRose I will ask him if pharmaceutical is an option for him.

@Bjorkdidit thanks for the research terms. Will have a look. It’s a shame it’s so poorly paid. Barely covers life expenses.

@MayaPinion Thanks! He hasn’t had much luck with interviews for other schools. He has got through to the final stage for a handful, but seems he is done with teaching
