Would you use this?

Hi, would you use tinned fruit that’s 2 years out of date? My feeling is that it would be absolutely fine, but I don’t want to poison anyone!

Open it and see how it looks and smells. If it's okay, it's fine to eat. Don't do it if the can is dented though.

DramaAlpaca · 05/12/2024 21:39

Yes, I'd use it.

WeeWigglet · 05/12/2024 21:41

Yes there's no air in the can to allow bacterial growth.
You'll know as soon as you open it if it's dodgy.

MysteriousUsername · 05/12/2024 21:42

Yes, I ate some recently that was a few years out of date, and it was fine. Still got a few tins left.

AlisonDonut · 05/12/2024 21:43

I just chucked out some quince jam I made in 2012, that finally went off last month.

RisingSunn · 05/12/2024 21:43

I wouldn’t. The date is there for a reason.

I wouldn't, the thought of it gives me the 🤢

ObieJoyful · 05/12/2024 21:46

Thanks! I’ll buy some spare cans, just in case. It’s for a pudding, so I’ll use them eventually if these are ok.

I hate waste! 😁

Yes, as long as the can is not dented. Open it, and see, smell, taste.

ForPearlViper · 05/12/2024 21:53

Most tins have a 'best before' and not 'use by' date. It just means that the manufacturer can't promise that that the taste or texture won't start to deteriorate after that date. Generally, it just means it hasn't been tested beyond that date. Like you say, I'm sure it's fine.

TherealmrsT · 05/12/2024 21:56

Yes, as long as it looks and smells ok and the contents are not fizzy. Texture might have gone soggy is all.
Dates hadn't used to be on tins when I was young....

colesr · 05/12/2024 22:19

No I wouldn't, I'm a stickler for dates though.

Wow!!

Not really, they are called preserves for a reason.

Canning is one of the best ways of preserving food, and should be good for decades.

whatwouldyoudoifisangoutofkey · 06/12/2024 08:48

One of the reasons for dates on some canned preserved foods is profit.
You throw away something that's perfectly edible and buy more.

Dartmoorcheffy · 06/12/2024 14:10

It will be absolutely fine if the tin has not been damaged.

SinnerBoy · 06/12/2024 14:18

My nan found a wartime tin of margarine in her cupboard under the stairs, in 1980. She used it for baking and here I am, 44 years later.

Others have already explained that the fruit starts to disintegrate slightly, but is otherwise fine and perfectly edible.
