Does anyone else suffer from nightblindness?

I don’t drive so it doesn’t affect me as much, but I hate travelling at night. I get all lost and it takes me a bit longer to figure out where I am especially when I’m in the bus

Anyone else?

Yep that's me , I hate it that much that last year I went by train even though I was taking my daughter a desk . It was an interesting journey but still better than doing the 100 miles in the dark !

I used to suffer terribly - I'm short sighted with Duanes Syndrome, and driving at night was terrifying. I was lead to believe it was just something you accept as a short sighted person prone to double vision - my depth perception is enormously reduced in poor light, especially with reflections, rain etc.

The after years of going to Specsavers (who assess prism requirements manually) I switched to Vision Express (measure prism using technology). Instantly increased the prism in my lenses for both eyes.

It took some getting used to but suddenly I find myself not struggling as much driving at night anymore...!

It’s so strange. I definitely wouldn’t be able to drive in an area that I didn’t know. But tbh I think I would struggle with driving anyway (I’m ND)

Yes, my eyesight is terrible in the dark, I only drive locally when it's dark. Luckily it doesn't affect my husband or son.
When I asked my optician why, he just said it's a combination of short sightedness, astigmatism and age, there's not a lot you can do about it.
When it's raining as well, it's even worse.

AnnaDelvorkina · 05/12/2024 19:11

I have 20/20 vision but when I need to go to the toilet in the night (about 3 metres walk, every night, at least twice), I can’t see a bloody thing. And I eat a fuckton of carrots!

FlangeSprocket · 05/12/2024 19:16

Today I walked into a large black (telecoms?) box in the street, at 5 pm. I couldn't really even see it when i focused. Short sighted, astigmatism and now cataracts makes the dark + headlights totally impossible. It's more night-total-confusion than night blindness.

OAPapparently · 05/12/2024 19:31

I’m like that. I can’t see much at all in the dark. I can’t even put my seatbelt on as a passenger in a car without the light on.

GreengrassofW · 05/12/2024 20:00

i struggle on dark bits of motorway where they skimp on lights, the a3 is really bad

VeryQuaintIrene · 05/12/2024 20:04

Another one here! I am increasingly hating driving in the dark (I'm 60 and very short-sighted, I have to suck it up as I live in the US with limited public transport but I reckon in about 5 years when I'm retired, I won't be doing it.

Theunamedcat · 05/12/2024 20:05

I can see great in the dark until I get in the car then it sucks especially in the rain

ReignOfError · 05/12/2024 20:07

I do now because I have bloody cataracts. Given how long waiting lists are, I’ll probably be too old to drive by the time they’re fixed. I’m looking to move somewhere with walkability and public transport.

rockstep · 05/12/2024 20:08

I never used to but as Ive got older I find driving in the dark much harder, my friend said the same too but it doesn't seem to affect my DH.

Fuzzyandwarm · 05/12/2024 20:21

Are you allowed to be driving in the dark when you have night blindness? I would have thought not but have never looked into it because I don't suffer from it.

bloodredfeaturewall · 05/12/2024 20:54

have you had an eye test?

turned out I needed glasses - and that solved it.

RedRiverShore5 · 05/12/2024 20:59

I find driving in the dark very difficult, I'm ok in our town where it isn't that dark anyway with the cars and streetlights and knowing the roads but I don't venture out of town at night, fortunately I worked on the outskirts of town so driving home was ok in the winter

YarkYark · 05/12/2024 21:17

Er...I am the only person reading these posts thinking that maybe people who are happily saying "Yeah! my eyesight's shit in the dark, but it's okay I just drive on the local roads I know" need to give their head a wobble? Or perhaps more directly STOP BLOODY DRIVING IF YOU CAN'T SEE!

RedRiverShore5 · 05/12/2024 21:29

If you are driving in town it isn't really dark, lots of street lights and other cars, I just find it bad on country roads with headlights in the other direction

I imagine people are exaggerating a little. I can absolutely do it and do it safely because I have to, but concentrating to make sure I'm not a danger on the road takes up more headspace for me than it does, say, for my partner and I will be glad when I don't have to do it any more.

NunyaBeeswax · 05/12/2024 21:49

My vision at night has changed significantly recently.

I used to drive at night, I used to walk at night. When I was younger I had a night shift job and would cycle to and from work in the black of night in the winter.

These days, I don't feel safe even walking the dog. I don't know if the cars are brighter now or the street lamps dimmer, but, once night sets in, I can't see a thing outside anymore. It's weird.

LollipopViolet · 05/12/2024 21:52

Registered sight impaired and not allowed to drive due to this. I have very poor night vision - I will use my cane unless with a select few friends who will guide me because I just struggle so much in the dark. Depth perception is iffy in the day and non-existent in the dark.

I rely on taxis and friends if I need to travel at night.
