WWYD - child wants non-age appropriate gift

RoaryLion1 · 05/12/2024 16:09

My DS (3.5) has his heart set on a particular toy for Xmas. For months, every time I ask what he wants from Santa, he mentions this toy. He’s seen it at a local playgroup and loves it. The problem is - it’s clearly a toy for 1-2 year olds and is therefore too young for him (think big plastic truck). I think I should get it for him because otherwise he’ll be disappointed on Christmas Day - but part of me thinks he’ll get bored of it so quickly, it’s a waste of money. He’ll get other, more grown up gifts, but it still feels weird for his main present to be something for a little toddler!

so WWYD?

If only a three year old could read the 1-2 age tag then he would know it wasn’t for him. 😂

Get him the truck. It’s a perfectly reasonable thing to ask for and please don’t spend the rest of his life looking at age tags for things. (Exceptions being movies, social media etc). Otherwise my 3 year old who was in 4-5 year old clothes at that time would have looked like we pre shrunk all his clothes.

Lindy2 · 05/12/2024 16:45

Just buy him the truck.

It's not an inappropriate toy for a 3 year old and it's what he's asked for.

TheThreeCheesesOfTheApocalypse44 · 05/12/2024 16:47

Is it one of those little ride on truck things ?

I was desperate for one of those as a kid because the little boy in toymaster catalogue was pictured putting a bag of sweets in the lift up seat. I was convinced I'd get a load of sweets with it 🤣🤣🤣

Get him the truck BTW, they're only little once.

A three year old can play with a truck. I don't think it's too young for it. I would buy it if it's what he really wants

Chloe42 · 05/12/2024 16:49

I thought you were going to say that he was little and wanting something like a dart board.

100% get the truck. Don't rush him growing up, it goes fast enough as it is. My son would have got a good couple of years out if that still at his age.

Haha I’m clearly massively overthinking it! Thanks all. Truck has been ordered 😀

Yay!

It’s not a ride on truck but it’s almost as big as one! He’ll be able to push his baby sister around in it 😅

i hope you got your ride on truck and sweets!

Even the brightest children play with toys two or three years beyond the "from" age. Everything that says "from 3 years".suits five year olds. It's a safety guidelines not a play directive. Buy the truck.

Chocolateteabag · 05/12/2024 17:04

My nearly 11 year old still plays with his toddler ride on tractor (every time I suggest that we pass it on)

Okay so now he rides it at full pelt down a slope rather than steadily on the flat - it it's still very much in use

Buy the truck!!

SharpOpalNewt · 05/12/2024 17:06

He's still so little, of course it's ok for him to play with a baby toy.

NoahsTortoise · 05/12/2024 17:12

Glad you ordered it OP!

My mum decided I was too old for a gift I really wanted when I was around his age, and I still bring it up to this day...I'm 36 now 😂 But I was truly gutted.

JustAnotherDadOf2 · 05/12/2024 17:12

Get it, he will be delighted, there's no problem here ..

jannier · 05/12/2024 17:16

My 7 year olds still play with their cars and trucks

ObtuseMoose · 05/12/2024 17:17

Grown-up gifts like a suit, tie and a briefcase?

Mischance · 05/12/2024 17:20

So glad to hear he will get his truck.

Children do not read the labels on target age group, especially when they are 3!!

It always makes me smile when older siblings use a younger one as a good excuse to play with toys that someone has decreed are too young for them - bit like Dad with a train set!

Legoninjago1 · 05/12/2024 17:31

Hurrah! Well done OP! Sounds like he'll be a happy boy on Christmas Day!
You'd be shocked at my 8 year old's Christmas list I think! Definitely go with it though. The heart wants what the heart wants!

LumpyPumpkin · 05/12/2024 18:36

So glad you've ordered the truck. I can still remember desperately wanting a Tickle Me Elmo for Christmas and being told that I was too old.

modgepodge · 05/12/2024 18:41

I bought my child a set of those Tomy little squeaky eggs in a box (baby toy) in a charity shop when she was 4. Every time she saw some in a charity shop she got such joy out of them so in the end I gave in and let her have them. She’s now nearly 6 and I’m not sure who enjoys them more, her or her 9 month old brother….!

Sirzy · 05/12/2024 18:43

if there is a baby sister even more reason to get it when he outgrows it she will still be able to play with it

claudiawinklemansfringetrimmer · 05/12/2024 18:45

My DD is 6 and still plays with the car transporter she got when she was 2. Everyone loves a big truck!

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 05/12/2024 18:47

We recently handed over the family collection of Brio railway and trains to ds1 for his dd - and he started playing with it himself! I read books aimed at teenagers - they give me pleasure, so I see nothing wrong with it.

Life is serious a lot of the time, especially as we get older/grown up - so something that lightens that seriousness can’t be a bad thing, imo.

Theoldqueen · 05/12/2024 18:51

thehousewiththesagegreensofa · 05/12/2024 16:17

Why can't a 3yo play with a plastic truck? If it was a shape sorter or stacking rings, I could understand your point (although I did find it very satisfying putting my 11mo relative's toys the other day which involved doing both of those things!) but he could be playing with a truck for a while yet.

My 4 year old will happily sit and do her shape sorter. Every time I try and get rid of it, she drags it back out the pile.

Let them be little, and all that.

My dad got me a tickle me Elmo for my 11th birthday, I bloody loved it 🤭

MuggleMe · 05/12/2024 18:58

Glad you ordered it, it's giving me Mr freeze vibes. At least he has a younger sibling who will enjoy it when he's grown out of it. And it'll show him you care about his opinions.

MiddleClassWomanOfACertainAge · 05/12/2024 19:42

Oh bless him. I hope he grows up to be a truck driver.
