Delay repay on work expensed train travel - do you fess up?

We were delayed on a work journey by 90 mins earlier in the week so can claim the whole cost of the ticket back. The original payment has already been reimbursed by work.

Do you own up and offer to repay it, or not? There's nothing in our policies to state either way.

It was arrival for 12 so we missed the lunch buffet and first 30 minutes of presentation. So no significant inconvenience to us personally, apart from having to buy lunch (which we'll expense anyway).

So don't expense the lunch and keep the refund

Yes. It's called integrity or honesty.

If you booked and paid for it yourself, then claimed it back from work after, you keep the refund back to your original personal card.

If you booked it through work, and work paid for it the refund goes straight back to the business credit card or whatever and work gets it.

Anything else too complicated.

It doesn't automatically go back to the work credit card!! Our work policy says we have to give it back but there is literally no way I can pay it back as they don't have a process

biscuitsandbooks · 08/12/2024 12:05

It depends on your work policy - you need to do whatever it says. No point risking a disciplinary over a tiny sum of money.

somuchtodonextyear · 08/12/2024 12:11

I always keep it

I don't have the company bank details anyway

In my mind the companies pays to get me from A to B and back again. That part of the deal has been fulfilled

Compensation via Delay repay is my compensation for standing about at train stations or on over crowded trains. Enables me to get something to eat whilst I wait and a hot drink or uber home from whatever station the train has decided it's not going past. My childminder is with her rights to fine me for late picks ups (she hasn't done yet but she could and how would I expense that if I had to repay the compensation?) why should I be out of pocket?

What exactly is the company getting compensated for? They have not suffered any "loss" or inconvenience whereas I have

(Last week was a good week for me and got nearly £300 back 😇)

MajorCarolDanvers · 08/12/2024 12:11

No. Because the compensation is for your time.

Doggymummar · 08/12/2024 12:14

Surprised there is no policy. My oh works for one of the top banks and they are told it's inconvenience money and to keep it. They have no way to deal with it if you try to return it.

Mamabear487 · 08/12/2024 20:43

You were the one delayed so it’s your compensation for that.

Catsnap · 08/12/2024 20:49

Keep it. It’s not dishonest. You’re the one dealing with the delay, whether it was inconvenient or not is a matter of chance.

bettybyebye · 08/12/2024 21:01

I always keep it! As others have said it’s compensation for the inconvenience and the loss of my time

Caterina99 · 08/12/2024 21:14

I say keep it. I’d view it as compensation for the inconvenience to me personally for the journey taking longer.

However clearly it’s not that obvious so I’d probably ask your boss!

I had a similar situation where my mum very kindly paid for a flight for me to visit her. The flight home was massively delayed and I was able to claim £500 compensation. I did offer it to my mum but she said to keep it for myself as I was the one who suffered due to the delay, not her.

Dearover · 08/12/2024 10:13

We're allowed to claim and keep it because the individual suffers the inconvenience.

Us too

Work pay for me to get to whoever they need me to get to - that had still happened. It's me who's had my evening messed up.

fishfingersandchipsagain · 08/12/2024 21:20

We are told to keep it.
