Child benefit when mat leave puts you under threshold

Hoping someone can advise as I’m having zero luck with HMRC.

I’m a high earner in a professional role, salary is £90k a year. I’m currently on maternity leave (April 2024- April 2025) and (due to enhanced maternity benefit) I will receive around £37 for that tax year.

Im grateful to be in a fortunate position with my employment but as a family we’ve had a difficult time with my husband being out of work and suffering ill health since our child has been born. Various issues mean that money is now tight.

Would I be entitled to claim child benefit for a short period until I go back to work as I’ll be under the earning threshold this year?

Thank you, appreciate any guidance.

Yes, you would. Sometimes you get really lucky with how the financial year falls in relation to maternity leave and this is an example of that!

edit - sorry, lucky is probably the wrong word given your health issues 💐

Yes but your husband should put the claim in to get the NI credit if he's out of work.

Yes, you can. Just don’t forget to reset if your dh gets back into work and he’s above the threshold
