If you have teens who have or are soon to pass their driving test.

Did you or will you pay for?

Driving lessons
First car
Car insurance

I know that it will be different for each family but I'd like to get a general consensus.

I paid for first lesson and, as her father pays no maintenance, just gives her a bank card for a (foreign) bank account he has, I encourage her to take out cash regularly and use it for lessons. I suspect he never tops up the account/contributes regularly unless fully utilised but not sure as she can’t see transactions. 🙄

I will probably pay to insure on my 14 year old car when ready.

She will have money for Christmas and birthdays. If she wants a car she can use her CTF.

For each of mine, we gave them a 'promise' for the 17th birthday, to pay for 10 lessons as and when they were ready.

They all paid for the other lessons / licences / tests themselves.
When they passed, I put them on the insurance on my car, and we paid half of the difference in cost and they paid half.
They have all bought their own first cars.
They have all paid for their own insurance.

DS paid for his own car with money left to him by his grandparents. We paid for the lessons, he didn't have many and we paid for his insurance.

Luckydin · 04/12/2024 19:32

We paid for all driving lessons and tests, half the price of a car, ds paid the other half and we are paying for the first year insurance so by the time it renews it will be a much more manageable amount for ds.

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 04/12/2024 19:33

Dd paid for all of it, she worked from 16 and saved enough money for driving lessons.

Her child trust fund had enough in it to pay for a small second hand car and insure it once she turned 18.

I paid for the test and theory test.

cassgate · 04/12/2024 19:34

Paid for all lessons and tests for Ds. He passed his test a few weeks ago and has just bought a car which he collects at the weekend. He paid for the car from savings accrued since he was born. We paid for the insurance .

We paid for driving lessons though the main block was his 17th birthday present.

We insured him on our car as a learner driver so he could practice.

He paid for his theory and main test.

Now he's passed, we gave him my old car, but he knows in a couple of years it will become his brother's. It's the 'starter' car in the family and and he's the eldest of 4, so it's not his car for ever.

We went halves on insurance once he passed and he pays for his own fuel.

He's in sixth form and has a part time job. Probably won't take the car to uni when he goes.

MadridMadridMadrid · 04/12/2024 20:37

We paid for lessons. DC didn't pass before going off to university. If had passed, would not have bought own car, but would have put on insurance to drive our car provided cost not completely crazy.

socks1107 · 04/12/2024 20:48

My daughter has passed today!
I paid for both mine to have lessons, and be insured on my little car. ( I don't use it mid week as commute by train so makes sense) I'll pay for their insurance until they have finished university, they both live at home for uni so this cost compared to paying for accommodation is small

AnythingGoesAllThroughTheNight · 04/12/2024 20:51

My parents only paid for the first block of lessons (15/20 hours) as my birthday present. I then had to pay for everything else myself.

Doctor101 · 04/12/2024 20:53

Yes paid for lessons then when he passed his test his Uni course needed out of town placements so gave him my 10 year old Ford Focus and bought myself a new carSmile
Paid for first year insurance ( nearly 3k) as no way he could have paid it himself. However hoping to renegotiate insurance when hopefully he's been driving a few months without any claims!

Bikechic · 04/12/2024 20:56

Paid for lessons for both DDs. Dd1 bought her own car and insurance. DD2 is on our insurance that we pay for. She puts petrol in. Both over 20 when they passed.

Daschund1 · 04/12/2024 20:57

Paid for provisional driving licence, lessons and test for all 3DC. 2 older DS did apprenticeships so we bought their first cars and they paid the insurance.

DD is much older in the school year than most (September Birthday) and passed in her first year at 6th form. She can't afford her own car and plans to go to a city centre uni next year so won't drive there. I pay for her as a named driver on mine. I had to buy a new car because it was eye-watering to insure her on my existing one.

Iamthemoom · 04/12/2024 20:58

Still learning but we paid for most of the car with DD17 putting in 2k of her own money. We paid learners insurance and will pay insurance when she passes. We pay for driving lessons. She needs to be able to drive around here so it's benefitting us all to get her driving. She has earned and saved enough money to pay for it all but we'd rather she kept that for a house deposit in the future.

Frowningprovidence · 04/12/2024 20:59

We paid for driving lessons and a few bits like the MOT and some tyres.
