Washing Line Lovers - new Winter thread

I started the laundry on the line thread with a different name.

I wondered if anyone was around to discuss my very niche interest in winter line drying 🧺 ❄️ 🧺💕.

I know people think I'm crazy but things can dry, particularly sheets, and they smell better then anything in the world.

Plus I don't have a dryer.

I get my washing out on the line still if I can. As you say, some stuff can dry and even if thicker things aren’t fully dry they smell better for the fresh air.
not had many windy days here though recently…the holy grail of winter drying!!

Do you have a high line OP, where the washing blows nicely? I've seen neighbours put washing out on a rotary line in winter but it just hangs.

I had a rotary but within a week of putting it up it goes wobbly in the ground (not set in cement) so I gave up. I have however just treated myself to one of these (waiting for it to arrive) so will be giving outdoor winter drying another go.

I'd love to do this. My dryer is about to conk out yet again.

I just can't cope with having so much to wash and then it all potentially coming in damp though.

Would love some tips!

I don't have a tumble dryer so I put washing out whenever I can. I have a Hills rotary washing line, now they are not cheap but you can wind them up so that the drying arms are higher than the fence so any little wind will catch the washing and blow it around.

Houseplanter · 04/12/2024 08:39

I've dried most of my washing outside for the last couple of weeks.

During the winter months I have a line up nearer the house where it's windier and catches more sun. I managed to get towels, jeans etc dry last week.

I do think it's an effort though. I watch the forecast for a good day, wash the night before and fold in to a basket. Then it needs to be out early and in before 3 at the latest else it's damp again regardless of how much drying it's done.

I hate wet washing in the house but will only tumble dry if I really have to

Yes, I only do it as the line is next to the back door. It has to be easy for me.

Hills rotary, I'll look that up. We don't have a huge garden though so the line suits me for space.

It is a kind of labour of love but also I'm a bit addicted to the smell of line dried washing 😂

Bilbo,

The wind and sun are the holy grail of WLD (winter line drying) (!)

But duvet covers and sheets do get dry and even a very think hoodie yesterday got a bit dryer.

But yes, it must come in by three!

Sorry Bilbo - no I don't have a high line and my prop broke , it would make sense to replace it as I love WLD

I've also found it cheaper at B&Q.

I love my outdoor line, and use it all year around, well, not SO consistently in the winter months as with humidity, and often freezing temperatures, laundry often doesn't dry so much as take on a really fresh and lovely scent that fills the air when it all comes back in to finish off overnight.
Of course it's more work to ferry the baskets up 2 flights of stairs and onto the deck, peg it out, bring it in no later than 4pm ( fall/winter hours) trudge it all back down to hang it on the indoor line. However it feels so good to do this!
The smell is fantastic, and I get a sense of satisfaction at having used a minimum of electricity.
With a long running forecast of frigid and very high winds, I carry the basket to a small unused room upstairs, pin and drape over a double winged free-standing drying rack. All dries overnight, as the heating is on.

Roll on spring! 👕👖👗👚
