Quick answer needed - smear

My smear is booked this morning. I've just got up and I'm bleeding can I still have it done? I'm on the mini pill and still having spotting so I don't think it's a full blown period. I haven't spotted in over a week ans typically it's started again today.

I need to have mine done as the last two years I've had to have colposcopies done after having a smear.

Do I need to cancel and re book?

Yes, you can still have it done. Just let the nurse know before she starts.

Excellent Thankyou! I just don't want to waste anyone's time by going if they can't do it.

Yep, you can usually still have it done. They’ll take a look first and assess whether they can get a decent scrape.

I do smears. I usually suggest going anyway and let the nurse have a look.

As long as I can fully see the cervix and am confident I can sample the cervix and not just blood I will take the sample. Never have them returned by the lab as inadequate. Their modern machines can often extract a small amount of blood cells so they check for HPV.

If bleeding is heavy enough that the cervix is obscured by blood, or I know that all I’m going to sample is blood, I’ll suggest rebooking.

Thankyou, I'm waiting to go in now so I'll see what the nurse says.
