goal setting, journals and coaching-does it work?

I have felt stuck in a rut generally for most of this year and attended a "change your life" course last week. the dust is settling after my initial enthusiasm. I am not even sure what my goal is. there are other courses to sign up for but I am sceptical whether all this stuff will actually work. I would like to meet new people but this focused on very practical targets.
I would love to hear opinions on whether coaching, goal setting etc has or hasnt worked ? thanks

I think it does work and can work, because if you focus on something and work towards it in steps, then surely you will eventually get there…

However, I do think that some of it is circumstantial. I did a similar process very successfully in my late twenties, but it was at a time before I had DC (so I had a lot more flexibility), my earnings were slowly but steadily improving and when my life was more likely to be on an upward trajectory anyway. I had also gone through a major bereavement, so frankly anything I did to support and care for myself was likely to lead to an improvement!

Perhaps I will do it again before New Year, to see if it helps now, in my late forties?

What was the course or process?

Yes, I have found goal setting very helpful.
For several years, I’ve done it with a friend, we used to listen to an Anthony Robbins CD but now we just do it from what we know. We set an evening aside, look back at the last session (we do it about three times a year) and then focus on goals going forward.

It’s interesting to look back because my goals have changed over the years, but I have achieved quite a lot of of them - some of them quite simple things like getting the house fixed up, booking a holiday, etc - I am a terrible procrastinator. It’s giving me a sense of where I’m going in the next few years.

Writing it down, breaking down the first steps and committing to doing it makes a huge difference and I don’t know if I would’ve done as well if I wasn’t sharing this with a friend. But I really think it’s helped.

I did a coaching course online in 2021, it was a year but I quit after 8 months as I felt it wasn't helpful and was very expensive. Not sure if that was just that life coach or the whole process.

I have found it more useful to attend that money on practical things to support goal and have made progress with being happier that way.

Good luck!

thanks all, this is very helpful. I feel I was helped to see what was blocking me, and I think I will try these tools myself, maybe with a friend,to set things in motion.

First you need to establish some goals. Maybe use the categories from Level 10 Life: then small habit changes that you can track with your diary / bullet journal.
