Please find me a hobby that is easy

The only hobby I have is reading. I'd love to be creative, but I'm not at all artistic and have no imagination!

I'm looking for something that isn't too expensive, that I can do at home, fairly easy and will give me a sense of achievement!

I can knit and crochet a bit, but don't enjoy it, possibly due to it causing pain in my hands (fibromyalgia and arthritis).

Definitely not sport, fibromyalgia means I've little energy most of the time and my joints and feet ache.

I'm in my late fifties. I've no interest in video games.

Sorry to be so picky, it's just I've tried many things, but didn't get on with them ... diamond painting was so boring and fiddly for example!

If you like to read, how about writing book reviews online? On a blog, or on GoodReads?
You will have fun, get to express yourself, and can connect with other people that like to read.

Imatorturedpoet · 01/12/2024 22:31

A lot of the suggestions are either artistic, or research, or writing. I get that these are hobbies for people, but it's not what I'm looking for. Nothing that's hard work. I just want to switch off without being artistic. Really appreciate the suggestions though.

Candle making? DS told me it is really easy - his girlfriend does it. You can add essential oils, make tea lights, recycle old tea cups, jam jars, ramekins. You can add dried orange slices or cinnamon sticks or lavender to decorate the outer layers. And you can give them as presents.

My New Year Resolution is to learn how to make lampshades. Nice ones cost too much. I want to make some really beautiful ones.

Jigsaws help me switch off

Ohnonotrain · 01/12/2024 22:32

Block printing. (It’s like Lino printing but easier imo).

I did a Christmas one at The Oast studio just outside of Tunbridge Wells recently.

What about crosswords, sudoku type things?

Writing letters of complaint?

Jigsaw puzzles, crosswords, virtual bookclub, scrapbooking/journallling, competitions, mystery shopping, supporting a charity (for example running their social media, treasurer..etc), pottery painting, jewellery making... i also get bored of hobbies easily so I commit to something for 3 months then try something new

Don't write off video games. There are so many genres out there you might find one you love.

Second this. Something like Animal Crossing might suit to begin with, it's very gentle and mindful, passes the time and is surprisingly satisfying! (although you'd need the initial outlay for a Switch lite and the game).

I also like puzzle games, some of them are beautifully crafted and drawn. Machinarium, Tiny Bang Story and Botanica kind of thing. Even Professor Layton. (Google them OP and you'll find screen grabs and a bit more detail).

I have no interest in fast paced driving or shooting or survival games like my DH plays but still get a lot of enjoyment from my Switch.

Oops sorry I quoted the wrong post! It was meant for a comment about diamond painting!

I speak two languages apart from English.

I think I'm looking for something more .. fun!

Why only at home? Would you consider a book club or mah Jong.

Sell stuff on vinted? Then buy poorly photographed stuff carefully, wash it, iron and re-sell it. If you want more 'excitement' sell by auction on eBay.

OrderOfTheKookaburra · 01/12/2024 22:40

Online jigsaw puzzles are good for just switching off. As are the "colour in" pictures that you tap in a colour then find all the numbers for that colour (digital paint by numbers).

Do you want to just occupy yourself or take part in something with other people?

I know you said knitting caused some pain, but knitting hats for preemie babies as they are tiny do not take a lot of work. You can get the circular knitting machines and could make a few beanies for cancer wards.

I enjoy reading on my kindle. With Kindle Unlimited you can access a bunch of books, any genre, I'm having fun reading a few werewolf/shifter ones, they're light and easy and great way of taking my mind off things. I have the kindle app in my phone and my tablet, so accessible wherever I am.

ManyATrueWord · 01/12/2024 22:43

Lego. I am convinced it is a cooler, easier version of jigsaw puzzles. It's not creative when you get the instructions and follow them, but you do end up making something.

Soap making was going to be my suggestion. Sounds like you want a craft. If you did basic candle making you could then trawl charity shops and car boot sales when you felt up to it for cups and saucers or other vintage things to use as holders. And you could sell them on behalf of a charity if you liked.

Car booting was my hobby for a while. Fresh air. Chats with new people. Interesting stuff. Suited me well.

I've no room for any more house plants, I've been growing and propagating them for five years now.

Maybe you should sell/give them away and grow fruit & veg instead. Or grow them in your garden if you have one.

I think you're confusing people by talking about your lack of creativity, it's a bit unclear whether you're looking for a creative hobby that suits you or not looking for a creative hobby at all.

I love Lego, but not sure it can be counted as a cheap hobby. But I agree it is so much fun!

GavlarShmavlar · 01/12/2024 22:55

Learn the ukulele. Very cheap to buy, you can simply sit it on your knee and it's very quick to get started on.

MarmaladeSideDown · 01/12/2024 22:56

Do you like collecting things? I have collections of vintage jewellery (mostly old brooches), old postcards, fossils, and I'm interested in crystals and stones. There's some amazing ones out there and they are not expensive.

I also have a ridiculously large collection of gardening books.

NannyR · 01/12/2024 23:00

Jigsaw puzzles - you can buy them from charity shops for £3-4 or even borrow them from the library. No artistic skill or imagination needed, you just put the piece where it fits. I find them great for relaxing and switching off and get very absorbed in them whilst watching TV or listening to music.

screamtoabloodysigh · 01/12/2024 23:14

Learn guitar. Doesn't take long to play a few songs and there are loads of online things. I'm marginally better than crap, but as I have no intention of performing outside my living room, it doesn't matter. I strum along to my favourite songs and can lose myself for ages.

Started with 3 chords, then Gradually added more.

Not a hobby as such but what about befriending? Where you volunteer to chat over the phone to a lonely person?

ManyATrueWord · 01/12/2024 23:20

@OrderOfTheKookaburra I am assured it is much more cost effective if you can bear to sell on the set afterwards!

Better try preserving as a hobby. Collect old jars, go foraging or accept windfalls. Experiment with all kinds of flavours.

ManyATrueWord · 01/12/2024 23:22

Ooh! Ooh! I know! You start a blog where you try new things and review them for how well they fit with your requirements and if you would do them again. The hobby is making content

I say blog, pick your medium. TikTok maybe.

RomainingToBeSeen · 01/12/2024 23:22

You said you could crochet/knit. Would you consider doing squares for something like the Woolly Hugs project? Can be as easy or complicated as you want to make it but a really worthwhile cause.
