Rome advice

Sweetpea333 · 01/12/2024 19:05

I've had a rotten time lately. My mum died in October and I feel so crappy. I decided to book a little trip to Rome to get me out of this rut.

I've booked tickets for The Vatican and Colloseum. I'd appreciate any advice and tips on where to go/what to avoid!

Thanks x

Campo di fiore market. Absolutely full 8f great stalls and surrounded by lovely coffee shops and delicatessen.

Trastevere district in the evening for amazing food at really reasonable prices. Sweet entertainers and no traffic, just cobbled streets and a square with outside seating (with patio heaters)

Yes, this was also lovely.

Visit Santa Maria Della Vittoria. Beautiful church housing Berninis 'Ecstasy of Saint Theresa' which is breathtakingly beautiful ( look into the history of the art work beforehand )
A little known gem ❤️
The absolute highlight of my last Rome trip
I'd recommend all the usual stuff too. Wonderful place

Ps. So sorry about your mum Flowers

Sorry about your mum. Make sure you take very comfortable shoes, those cobblestones hurt when you do a lot of walking! We loved the Segway tour, you get to see a lot and the Segways are great fun. We stayed in Trastevere which was fab, the Vatican museum is overwhelming but not in a good way, I've seen it a few times now and wouldn't bother again. Take time to sit at a cafe and watch the world go buy, Rome is wonderful.

Sorry about your mum OP.

I couldn't see, but probably missed it, anyone mentioning the Spanish Steps.
I love Rome. Have been twice and plan to take my sons next year also.

Enjoy.

Thanks everyone. I really appreciate all the advice. I'm going for 4 nights and will have 3 and a half days. I think that'll give me enough time to have a lovely time. I'm not going to do my usual and run myself ragged. I've a feeling already that I'll want to visit again!

Spend some time wandering the streets of Trastevere. Lots of locals so you'll find amazing cafes and restaurants. Also highly recommend a food tour. We tasted some amazing food and wine and found some real hidden gems. I recommend it to everyone that goes.

I second Travestere. It is beautiful to walk around, stop and eat and is a really stunning place. It somehow feels more real than the main tourist atttactions (which are obviously amazing but you sort of feel like you've seen them so many times in the movies iyswim)

coffeepulease · 02/12/2024 21:44

.*Trastevere!

CyranoDeBergerQuack · 02/12/2024 21:45

Please go to the Partenon, it's an amazing building.
Villa Burhese park is lovely and you can hire bikes!

letshavetea · 02/12/2024 21:45

Another tip is that taxis are reasonably priced and if you’re short on times (and tired of foot) they are very helpful. Take good quality shoes with cushioned soles. The cobbles are uneven and punishing to walk on!! Spend time in bars down side streets (cheaper) watching the world go by. Book the Domus Aurea (coop culture website for tours in English). It’s amazing. Sorry about your loss.

The Pantheon at the end of the day
as they close the doors
and the busker plays Pink Floyd outside
is like nothing else EVER

utterly spine tingling

THe Pantheon in the rain
The Pantheon in the sun
the best building there is

Talkinpeace · 02/12/2024 21:50

Castel St Angelo is brilliant

The Mausoleum of Augustus opened since I was last in Rome - have to go

Trajans Forum is amazing and less crowded as its newer

Elderflower14 · 02/12/2024 22:12

I stayed here in 2018
Basic but good. Very near the Termini bus station.

MikeRafone · 02/12/2024 22:27

I’ve been to Rome twice and both time eaten at a restaurant Enzo, you need to queue at about 6pm to get a table in the first sitting ( no reservations) both times the food was delicious and both my ddd and on the other occasion enjoyed the food immensely

MikeRafone · 02/12/2024 22:29

Enzo is in Trastervera

I stayed in this area the first time and liked staying here

we used the buses for getting about and walking

Sweetpea333 · 14/12/2024 17:17

Thanks for all the advice. I had a wonderful time in Rome and can't wait to go back. I especially loved The Sistine Chapel but I didn't scream (although my feet did)! 😉
