Do you leave your Xmas tree lights on if you're not home?

I remember growing up this was a big no no! I think house fires because of Xmas trees were common enough but not something we hear of lately. Is it because lights are better or because nobody leaves them on in an empty house.

Not mains electricity ones on the tree no.
But we have two sets of battery powered ones on a timer that are on when we’re out. One on the inside of the living room window and one outside on a small potted tree on the doorstep.

A house burned down recently in Dumfries due to Christmas lights so I will always turn mine off.

All lights off if we’re out.

but then I also turn off every appliance and plug socket in the while house if I go out too

I often leave my fairy lights on when I go out. Also might have the washing machine or tumble drier running, and the oven on (on a timer).

I want to leave them on to be able to see them when I arrive home from work but I don't just in case. I do leave them on sometimes at the weekend if only going out for an hour or two.

Same. I love the idea of walking in & it's all festive but my fear of house fires defeats me.

Also, why waste energy if there’s no one in to see them? Sure, LEDs are far cheaper to run & more efficient, but they still cost money to run.

Just checked ours. 480 bulbs - they use 3kWh for 1,000 hours of use. That's six weeks. In other words we can leave them on 24/7 from Remembrance Sunday to Twelfth Night for less than a quid!

(If we had sufficiently poor taste to make them flash they'd use considerably less Grin)

I’ll be honest, I like a gentle twinkle occasionally (not hardcore 90s rave flashing, which has my old bones reaching for a whistle & a naughty Ebenezer Goode 😉).

Sitting in the living room while the roast cooks, we’ve just calculated there are well over 1500 lights (in garlands, across the fireplace, not including all the little houses & their LED candles), and the tree (red & warm white, except for the bright white polar bear lights on the piano garlands). And there’s a small tree in the hallway, and a pink & white themed tree in the bedroom, plus the lit wreath on the front door…

If everything was on permanent flash I’d probably trigger a migraine!

Misspent youth as a theatre tech & drama teacher, love a bit of dramatic lighting. The more the merrier lol!

Please, please turn them off when unattended.

coxesorangepippin · 01/12/2024 19:10

Nope, off when out

yeesh · 01/12/2024 19:12

We don’t turn ours off until we take the tree down in January
