Cat fell of balcony

Dd has a cat around 5 months old. She has fell of the 3rd floor balcony. Dd can't find her. Is it possible she could have survived that fall?

Cats have fallen further and survived. If she can't find her then that probably means cat is still alive and probably quite scared. Lots of standing outside calling. Does dd have a cat carrier the kitten is familiar with and maybe a blanket that she could leave outside?

Has she knocked on doors to see if anyone has taken the kitten in? Posted on Facebook?

EmpressaurusKitty · 01/12/2024 10:16

Is your DD absolutely certain she fell? There’s no way she could have come back in & be hiding somewhere?

As well as blanket, if the cat’s used her litter tray recently maybe leave a bit of the litter outside too for the familiar smell.

I’d alert the local vets and look at catchat.org for a list of local rescues to contact in case someone takes her to one of them.

If / when your DD gets her back, top priority should be making the balcony cat safe. I’ve done mine - you’re welcome to pm me if your DD would like to talk about that.

One of my cats fell out a tree, broke both his hips and had nerve damage. He lived well into his teens

My fur baby did this once and he didn't have anything sinister wrong!
He was okay, just felt sorry for himself and needed lots of cuddles.
Broke my heart though finding him. He didn't run away mind. X

Possibly, the cat isn't at the bottom so likely in shock/injured and in hiding under a bush, I'd have a more thorough search

EmpressaurusKitty · 01/12/2024 19:28

Any news, @Poorcat22?

Sadly there's no news. Dd has been out several times to look . She has put some notes up near the block entrance. And also on social media.

I believe they are actually more likely to survive a fall from a higher floor than one story, because their self-righting function has time to work properly, and they can land on their feet.
I hope your cat is ok.

Pekkala · 01/12/2024 20:33

Mine was chased off the roof of a 2 story villa by some children - I was very distraught , and couldn't find him anywhere. He wandered in as if nothing had happened the next day. I still can't believe he survived (and I found new place and moved within the month!)

Normallynumb · 01/12/2024 22:22

I'm sorry to hear about poor cat
When a cat is in shock, they can go somewhere to hide away
Cats do survive surprisingly high falls because they tend to reposition themselves during the fall
If there is a local area FB page post there with a photo

Poor little cat. Please do not get another one.

That’s not necessarily fair. Not if the DD can learn from her mistake & make sure this never happens again.

She has another cat thats 6 years old . And he's always been fine. I guess she thought it would be the same for this cat.

Poor cat.

Please keep looking for her. She may have crawled to a nearby bush in someone's garden or be hiding at the back of a bin store or under an abandoned car.

I'd put up netting or something to stop that kind of thing happening again.

Allthehorsesintheworld · 02/12/2024 09:59

My cat jumped from a first floor balcony. Must have landed on his front legs and head butted the gravel as he had a bloodied nose and the vet thought concussion as he was a bit drowsy and out if it. Slept it off and was fine afterwards.
Cat is probably hiding somewhere.

CoolPlayer · 02/12/2024 10:01

Is the cat chipped? Someone may have taken her to a vets? Definitely go out at night when it’s silent and shout for her as well as the day time if she’s not returned by then. I hope she’s found safe x

Floralnomad · 02/12/2024 10:05

Is the cat chipped and neutered , call round all the local vets and post on all the local FB pages

SnapdragonToadflax · 02/12/2024 10:14

Poor cat. It's probably under a bush, cats hide in thick undergrowth when they're injured or very unwell. She needs to go out and actually climb inside bushes and shrubs to search for it, not just call.

jajhgyt · 02/12/2024 10:29

I'm sorry OP but notes and social media are not going to help this poor cat. Your DD needs to be actively searching into all the bushes etc until she finds the cat. The likelihood is the cat is injured and needs to he found asap. It's been a day at least, the cat will be suffering. The question shouldn't be 'can a cat survive' but 'how can we find the cat'

Where did i say dd is not looking . Just because I asked if a cat can survive and that dd has asked if people can keep a look out on social media. Does not mean she's not been looking. I don't understand how you came to that conclusion.

OP posts:
RosesAndHellebores · 02/12/2024 10:37

Your dd needs to download sounds of cats miaowing onto her phone and play them patiently in the vicinity. Take a chair and some food and stay out beyond dusk.

I could ask where I said she isn't as well? I said she needs to be actively searching into all the bushes etc - I'm not even the first to have said that. It was advice, just as others have already said.
