No returns, white rabbit 🐇

"Pinch, punch, first of the month, no returns, white rabbit."

And in retaliation:

"A pinch and a kick, for being so quick."

Final riposte:

"A poke in the eye, for being so sly."

It only counts if you do it before 12 noon. No violence is actually enacted.

Where’s the poll answer for what on Earth are you talking about? 😂

WilfredsPies · 01/12/2024 08:45

Never heard the white rabbit bit, but I know the rest.

Sux2buthen · 01/12/2024 08:48

White rabbits
White rabbits
White rabbits 🐇

I came across the rabbit thing (no colour specified) in an Antonia Forest novel, but I think had to ask about it on here, as had never come across it (non-Brit).

noeggspleasewerebritish · 01/12/2024 08:49

We (well the kids) do 'Pinch, punch, first of the month, no chatbacks'. Not a rabbit in sight!

Never heard the responses but I might steal the first one and not tell them about the last one.

I don't think we have the 'only before noon' rule for this one. We do for April Fools though.

This is the "official" explanation: Country Living

Growing up, it was just a good excuse to pinch my brother 🙄

Why we say 'pinch punch' and 'white rabbits' on the first of the month

Do you know where these superstitious phrases come from?

@RealHousewivesOfTaunton

All of that takes me back a bit!!

In the school I went to, there was a variation of "a pinch and a kick". It wasn't pleasant!! 😫

From my Nan -
White Rabbits
White Rabbits
Make me lucky
Make me find a bag of money

Only works for the first to say it!

FiveFoxes · 01/12/2024 11:04

In my family, the tradition was that "white rabbits" should be the first words you said on the first day of the month.

And at school it was pinch punch etc and a flick and a kick. I wasn't so keen on the violence!

Thanks for sharing the article about it. I have never questioned it!

Tell me more!

In year 1 and 2 of secondary it was "a kick in the dick for being so thick". How lovely we all weren't, but of course we all found it funny.

CrazyAndSagittarius · 02/12/2024 05:10

White rabbits were never mentioned in my local version of this growing up. And violence was DEFINITELY enacted!

cariadlet · 02/12/2024 05:35

We just did, "Pinch, punch first of the month and no returns of any sorts."

Growing up, it was a family thing. I didn't do it at school in case other kids didn't know what I was on about and thought I was being stupid.

Went round to see my Mum yesterday. Got her as soon as I went in. She was mad because she thought I'd forgotten and she would be able to get me.
I'm in my 50s and Mum is in her 80s. 😂
