In desperate need of putting on some weight. But am gluten free, mostly dairy free, have IBS so can't tolerate fruit/veg/garlic/nuts/onions/too much spice... any suggestions for what I can eat to put on some much needed weight?

Pip & Nut peanut butter. It’s made just from peanuts, with no horrible palm oil etc. Tastes good. I have it on promise gluten free toast.

ShootyBumPain · 30/11/2024 18:53

Horlicks, hot chocolates, Complan shakes... the like. I've just successfully gained 8lbs quite quickly with high calorie drinks between meals. It's not the healthiest way of doing it but I was really underweight so it didn't matter.

U are totally me. I do have the added extra of a bad gallbladder as well. Honestly. It’s hard. I can have pasta so have spaghetti bolognaise and the gluten free garlic breads are okay.

do u do stacking for ur veg? I tend to stick to five and have them roasted with new potatoes as other potatoes don’t sit well.

I have a bowl of fruits ( the one I can have ) and add the vanilla soya dairy free yoghurt with it. If u want to add more I sometimes add meringue in as well. I do mostly clean eat. So tend to stock up on the veg I can eat. For breakfast try a omelette. I fill mine with veggies and chicken with some toast for afters. What do u eat now?

Sorry I missed the bit where you said dairy free so iv deleted my unhelpful post 😳

LadyGabriella · 30/11/2024 18:55

My friend likes Huel drinks. They’re dairy free. You could try one and see if you like it. They’re not my favourite but nutritionally look quite good. You can get individual bottles in Sainsbury’s.

Sunnyside4 · 30/11/2024 18:55

If you're frying or stir frying something, use plenty of oil. Olive oil is really good for you.

If you can tolerate salad a mix Olive oil balsamic dressis good, you could possibly add a tiny amount of mixed dried herbs, pepper or salt. Keeps well for a few days in the fridge.

Scrambled eggs with df butter but for every egg add an additional yoke.

I wanted to come back and just re say. I understand. I am the same as u. Dairy free wheat free ibs. I also have a bladder that reacts to food and now I can only have food that is 3% less of fat. Life is hard. And it sucks. I don’t eat out much.
I was an idiot today. I have been in London all day to see a play. I bought my lunch which is normally chicken and new potatoes some carrot puff crisps ( kids section ) banana popcorn ( kids section again. But I forgot my dinner for the journey home. So I’m starving and won’t eat for a few hours. So I just wanted to say I understand.

Protein and fat. Avocado on gf toast, in smoothies. Do you eat meat, fish, eggs? Get good quantities of those. Your typical easy bland foods, like potatoes, pasta, gf bread/pastries everything with extra dairy free spread. Huel drinks or similar.

Also I’d see what might help with your IBS. Have you tried hypnotherapy? There is really good evidence on hypnotherapy to improve IBS and it is provided by the NHS, though going private no doubt would give you more options.

AtleastitsnotMonday · 30/11/2024 19:03

Add ground nuts to gf porridge (almond milk). If you can tolerate dried fruit or seeds use them to top it.

Crunchyqueen · 30/11/2024 22:36

Have you looked into FODMAP it's a specific diet for IBS. Some high calorie options from that would be avocados, olives and good quality extra virgin olive oil, tinned coconut milk, coconut milk yogurt or smoothies - a good brand is coyo, coconut based snacks, 70% dark chocolate, higher fat meat, so rump and rib eye steak, chicken thighs over breast, all cuts of lamb, duck.

Tesco do a lactose free high fat Greek yogurt which is delicious and really high calorie.

Meal ideas;

Curry with a tomato and coconut milk base with either lamb or chicken thigh would be a good one throw in veggies you can handle, spinach maybe?? with brown rice (higher calorie)

Lamb meatballs and pea pasta (you should be okay with this) nice tomato and olive oil based sauce

Add seeds so pumpkin and sunflower seeds to lunches.

Do you think you could tolerate pine nuts?! Not strictly a nut, if so you can make your own pesto with lots of olive oil.

Cook / brown using either Ghee butter or coconut oil.

Porridge for breakfast with nuts, greek yoghurt, berries. Second breakfast of eggs or avocado on GF toast

Lunch:
Homemade bean or lentil soup for starters.
GF wraps with chicken fajita fillings and beans. Puy lentils salad with salmon.

100-200 cal snacks twice a day . Chickpea or black bean brownies for snacks. Banana and Peanut butter snacks.

Dinner ideas

Jacket potato's and chilli , tuna, beans and cheese etc. Shepherds pie, fish pie.

Sausage and bean bake.

Roast chicken and potato's and Carrots.

Mackerel (calorie and nutrient dense) with black rice noodles (very calorie dense) and greens.

Always dessert after dinner:

Homemade crumble with gluten free toppings for desserts.

I have to eat high calorie foods at the moment. Chickpea and spinach curry with full fat coconut milk and rice, oat milk with hot chocolate and extra sugar, avocado on toast, peanut butter on toast, I don't eat meat but if you do then red meats like beef with a high fat percentage,

Crunchyqueen · 01/12/2024 14:35

She won't be able to eat beans or pulses with IBS.

Justonedayatatime11 · 02/12/2024 08:05

Thank you for the suggestions. @Crunchyqueen is right, I can't tolerate beans or pulses, nor oats unfortunately. DH and I worked out I'm getting in around 800 calories a day, which is really not enough. Too much of anything makes me feel dreadful which really doesn't help either!

OP posts:
Crunchyqueen · 02/12/2024 08:13

Oh gosh @Justonedayatatime11 no definitely not enough. Have you been to the GP. Everything you've written sounds like a quick GP visit for me. Just for a second opinion.

Cerialkiller · 02/12/2024 08:30

Fat, while nutritionally important is very satiating and is you've not been eating much then your appetite might not be able to take much without feeling full.

Ideally you want natural sugars and starchy vegetables and carbs. Carbs will help with appetite and trigger insulin release which will store excess as fat. Liquids is a good idea from pp. Fruit smoothie made with non dairy milk, sweetened yogurts if you can tolerate them. hot chocolate, potato based soups, egg fried vegetable rice.

potato is highly nutritious and unprocessed and versatile.

Sajacas · 02/12/2024 09:03

Fatty meat.
Rib eye steak, with fried eggs on top.
Oily fish, right out of the can, or mixed with egg and made into fish cakes.
Pork belly with crackling.
