I feel worse and worse as the day goes on

I got really drunk last night at the work Xmas party. I ended up going home with a member of senior leadership (would say I see them as a friend but this is the first time we’ve ever been out) we got in the taxi and I was fine up till that point. I was bladdered. I had to stop the taxi. Was sick out the taxi. Then again had to stop and do the same. Stumbled into my house. I am SO embarrassed that I behaved like that. They said it’s okay and texted me today and after I apologised telling me it was really no big deal.

im so embarrassed .

I’ll need to tell all the Aussies and Kiwi I work with that munted has another meaning. We all use it to describe inebriation
I won't be berated about this and I’m not retracting it

Zone2NorthLondon · 30/11/2024 17:15

You can keep this going I’m not apologising and I won’t be berated
You’re being ridiculously combative. You’re not the vocabulary police, get over yourself

But you do know now so maybe you could stop using it. I grew up in an African country in the fifties and I immediately recoiled from it when I saw you using it that way. There are many offensive slang words you could look up online but that does not make them acceptable.

RafaFan · 30/11/2024 17:57

At least you didn't go HOME with senior management. Now that would be embarrassing!

BunnyLake · 30/11/2024 18:00

We all went out for a Christmas dinner once and my boss spent most of the time with his face literally planted on his dinner plate he was so drunk (with the food still on it). I wouldn’t worry about it. Style it out as they say.

Letmegohome · 30/11/2024 17:14

@Zone2NorthLondon Just because you were unaware doesn't mean it's not an outdated offensive word.

You’ve found a random guardian article stating a niche interpretation of the history of the word ‘munter’ - then applied it to the word ‘munted’ which has a different meaning totally and means “drunk”. This isn’t even a widely accepted etymology for the word “munter” and the word ‘munted’ certainly isn’t yet cancelled! None of the official sources mention this history for the word. Like many etymologies, there's no fixed factual birthplace; linguists rarely settle on one etymology, instead assessing several theories - So you’ve posted one random theory as if it’s the one truth. Weird.

I’ll certainly be mindful now I know it’s derogatory connotations
However I won’t apologise or be berated about using it in context of inebriation when I wasn’t aware of another derogatory connotation
A quick google will confirm it’s a uk colloquialism for drunk. I used it in that context. One cannot apply a set of values or berate me for using munted in the context most would know it

Pickingmyselfup · 30/11/2024 18:03

Last year I got very drunk at a work event, probably would have been ok if it hadn't of been for the second go on the bucking bronco. I was very chatty, very unstable, knocked a few things flying and made a bit of a mess on my face eating before I stumbled home barefoot.

I still get reminded of my antics from time to time but we've all been there and all got a ribbing the next day about something so nobody cares. As long as you weren't offensive then I wouldn't worry, most people will just find it amusing.

Jostuki · 30/11/2024 18:05

@SnoopySantaPaws thank you for the explanation.

I'm teetotal so didn't realise that you could be fine one moment and then terribly drunk the next, I thought it gradually build up.

5128gap · 30/11/2024 18:05

You need to remember that this is a big deal for you because you're the main character in your life. To most other people you're a walk on part. This means their interest in you will be very fleeting unless you massively upset or inconvenience them. Two stops in a taxi wouldn't ruin anyone's night, so its not going to matter to your colleague enough to think much more than you were very drunk. Today they'll be doing their Saturday, wrapped up in their own lives and that'll be it. Put yourself into perspective.

But it has another bona fide meaning as that poster showed you. It may be offensive in your country but it’s not here and as pp said they said munted not munter.

Don't worry OP everyone gets drunk and embarrassed at at least one works do. It's like a rite of passage. And be proud, your embarrassment has resulted in the word munted becoming vastly more well known than it was this morning AND you have hosted an argument. 🙂excellent work.

There is no etymology offered for the innocent slang meaning whereas there is for the offensive one. I recognise that some words in some languages don't work in other languages but I suspect that this one has unfortunate origins.
And my country is the UK by the way - I only spent my childhood in an African country because my parents were there as British government employees.

It's fine to do things like this once or twice. It's tedious if you become the drunk person who needs looking after at every party.

Nope 😂

I mean yeah, sometimes it does, but it's often not until you stand up & go outside it hits you! Of course everyone is different!

Nothing to be ashamed of here. You might have been on a stickier wicket had you passed out in the back of the cab, and your manager had had to get you out the taxi and carry you inside your house.

As someone who did exactly that on the first work night out post-Covid and did actually have to be carried into her house by her manager, I can confirm that nobody mentioned it after I made my apologies the following week. (They might still think about it, but nobody mentions it - and I cut waaaay back at work events after that!)
